John Deere 820 3 cylinder diesel
I bought a 1969 820 3 cyl. with plans to restore it. I have found information on TractorData.com that shows that these tractors "with a sliding gear" tranny have 7 forward and 1 reverse gear (which is apparently what I have). Although the John Deere owners manual I got off eBay says that they either had 7 or 8 forward and 4 reverse gears. Can anyone tell me if I am going to have to tear into the tranny and fix it? Or is this the way they are? Any information would be helpful. THANKS:confused2:

workahaulic,
Welcome to the forum first of all, this is a good place to find information on your tractor as there are several members with these tractors.:):)

From what I can tell the Collar shift transmission was available in three versions.

From the 820 Tractor technical manual TM-4212 (Jan-70)
"Collar shift transmission

8-speed transmission with parking lock, without independent hand brake, 8-speed transmission without parking lock and with independent hand brake; 8-speed transmission without parking lock, with blocked 8th gear and independent hand brake.

With this transmission 8 or 7 forward and 4 reverse speeds are available."

The question about whether the Sliding gear transmission is the same I don't know. My 1973 820 has the 8F 4R with park position.

Best place for data is the JD site for the online parts book. And 1-800-522-7448 for the service and operator's manual. Those 820's have an open center hydraulic system which can be a concern if setting up for a loader etc. Which plant was the tractor built in? Info should be on both the serial number tags.

Here's 2 photos of the 820 trans COUNTERSHAFT AND BEARING SUPPORT,1st is sliding gear & 2nd is collar shift trans. It would require a lot of labor & parts to change a 7 speed to an 8 speed(vice-verse). I sold 820's when they were new and have never seen a 7 speed model although they exist.
