1969 case 580b
I have a 1969 case 580ck backhoe that will not start, it will not even fire up and die using starting fluid. i put approx 4 1/2 gallons of gas on top of approx 4 1/2 gallons of diesel with out realizing it until after it was running long enough to run out most of the diesel and die, then not being able to start it again.the gas has been drained and purged out with diesel but no can start, the baffling part is why it will not at least fire up and die using starting fluid!

Somehow starting fluid has obtained a reputation of being magic in a can, the real issue is you probably have to bleed your fuel pump or injector pump.

I'd pull the injectors and check for gas in the cylinders and in the oil. If the engine is full of gas it's probably a good thing it didn't fire. I've always heard gas will run a diesel engine. You may have no compression.

And what wolfy said after making sure all the gas is gone.

I have a 1968. Flush out both filters, the injection pump and the injection lines. This model does not have a fuel pump, all gravity. Then crack the injection lines at the injectors one at a time to be sure you are getting fuel. Takes a lot to kill one of these. Good luck.

Gasoline does not have any lubrication properties & the inj. pump & injectors are lubricated by the fuel.
ITS POSSIBLE that the injection pump has seized.?? Easy to diagnose..
Remove the inlet line.. make sure you can see the fuel in the inlet "hole".. fill it, if nec..
Now spin the engine over for a minute. SEE if the fuel was sucked down..
IF the inlet is still full.. the pump is seized/locked-up.. & very expensive to repair..
Feel free to contact me.

Injection pump is a gear driven rotary. If the motor turns over and the injection pump does not, it usually means a sheared key or sheared shaft. I would try the simple tests and fixes first, then start exploring the more catastrophic possibilities.

Did you bleed the fuel delivery system? When you drained and purged the tank you most likely got air in the system and it needs to be bled out. If it were me, I'd also change the fuel filter and then bleed the system starting at the filter and moving through to the injector pump. make sure you have a well charged battery before you start. If you don't know how to bleed the system. ask for help.

I have 2- 68 ck's, and once ran out of fuel they are usually a bear to start.--The system must be bled, you need to start with new filter, then work to injector lines, very messy!,-- the transfer pump is in the back of the injection pump.--One of mine went out so I used an electric pump. Works good on that one, BUT the other one has injection pump problems, so re-build time, and it will have to be sent off somewhere for someone else to fix for me.
Starting fluid won't run these 580 engines, at least mine wont!---thanks; sonny580
