Tractor
none yet
I'm purchasing about 12 acres of pasture land & I have the opportunity to buy a 1966 4020 John Deere for $12,000. I was told it has 97 hp. The seller told me he replaced the injector pump, new clutches & had the heads fixed. It would also come with a 8 ft. Westondorf FEL & I believe an 8 ft Big Kutter box blade with 800 lbs of wheel weights. I am only planning on hobby farming at this point & know that this is probably more tractor than I need. There is an almost 1000 ft gravel drive that I will need to maintain & some light brush hog work, otherwise the rest of the acreage will be hayed. I have a ZTR mower for the house yard, & there is a good sized garden that we will need to till, but I know that tractor is too big. In the future we are looking into a few cattle, (less than 5) & some other small livestock. Would this tractor be a good investment? I have no experience with tractors but with everything I have looked into it sounds like a 30-50 HP tractor is more appropriate for my plans. Just don't want to miss a good purchase.

On a side note he also has a 2019 1025R with 250 hrs, with some attachments that he was willing to sell for $20,000. Thinking this may be a little small for our plans. I've been considering just buying a new compact tractor with the financing options, also. I'm looking for recommendations for tractor options for our anticipated use. Thanks!

I do love the old 4020’s, imho it is way to much tractor for your needs. Spend the same $ on a 40-60 hp tractor and never look back.

Yup, the 4020 is probably too big for your needs.
Try looking at new, Kioti, Kubota, LS, Yanmar, Branson, tractors in the 40+ HP range.

The 4020 IMO is one of the best all around tractors ever made. It might be big for your needs but it is a work horse.

I would pass on the 4020. Too big.

I would also pass on the 1025R (used) unless it comes with a PILE of attachments. He's out of his head on that price.

At $12K the 4020 is not an outstanding value and is most certainly not a good fit for your needs. At 55 years old even the short term reliability of the Deere is unpredictable. It is most certainly not a high percentage purchase for a person with little or no tractor experience and needs that don't match the tractor's capabilities.

I guess I left out all the attachments that came with the 1025. My mistake, he is selling it with the FEL, mid mount mower, box blade, pallet forks, pull behind tiller, & spreader.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I was leaning towards passing because I knew the 4020 was probably too much, but also didn't want to miss a great buy.
