Howdy folks well i have a funny/goofy event happen yesterday. Anyways yesterday i stumbled upon a 1966 Farmall 656 for sale a few miles down the road. The owner placed a For sale paper at the local feed store said it was a IH 656 Hydro with Bush hog and bale spear. So after a quick call i ran by and looked it over and test drove it. Never seen or researched a hydro but, the owner had it for 10 years barn kept only bush hogged 2 acres 4 times a year and disc the garden some. It stared right up ran perfect He said "Left side is TA pull back for TA and DD Forward'" "Right side Reverse is to the front and forward just pull back." It pulled good TA was strong walked right up a huge hill no slip forward or back. But it was really slow in TA High or low... So he said the 1 year old Howe's 8ft Bush hog and new Bale spear go with it for $3500 total. I happily paid him, went and got my goose neck trailer. Got it home was very happy with my purchase but, still not sure how i felt about a Hydro even with only 6200 original hours on working tach. Then this morning i started to order little things like New steering wheel, shifter boot's and shifter knob's. When i see the shifter knob for a Hydro says forward is forward not pulled back...Went out side grabed the shifter and moved it around...the darn thing was a 5 speed not a hydro he'd been using only first and reverse for 10 years and had no idea it was a 5 speed... Even called him he said "he had no idea it was a 5 speed"... I don't normally impulse buy with-out a lot of through research first like on my Ford 8000 and my pick-up trucks. I've drove as lot of 706's, 766's daily, 1066 and so on we both felt kinda dumb but i'm a die hard Ford guy never seen a hydro in person so had no idea what to look for lol. But i do need some help on what the parts that need replacing are called/OEM part number i have a manual on the way but, it's a week out. Anyways it's the two pieces on the front axle the silver piece and the one welded I've found some like it but they a little different.. I can't find the right ones online that mine have but, here's some pics of it as well after a good bath in my shed better pics tomorrow if not raining.

This should help you out finding parts & numbers. Official Case IH Online Parts Store and Case IH Catalog for Best Parts Search and Best Parts Look Up. Case IH Parts for Case IH Tractors, Case IH Combines, Case IH Tractors, Case IH Manuals, Case IH Parts If you select a dealer, it will show you the price, or, just go to Messicks. Messicks | Your home for New Holland, Case IH, Kubota & More...

I have a '67 model. Those are great tractors..!! Not the easiest on fuel, when on a hard pull, but to be honest, not that much more fuel consumption than my Ford 2000 3 cyl. with half the HP.

If the shifter seems a bit sticky, remove the small piece of cowling on the right side of the side dash. It is thin fiberglass, so be careful. The shifting mechanism/linkages are under there. Should be a grease fitting or two to lube things up.

You'll love the sound of that 6 cyl. when it gets on a pull. She'll talk to ya'..!!

Forgot to mention, if you are looking for aftermarket parts, or salvage parts, click on the part in the menu. Another window will pop up. You can copy, and paste the part number in bold black to a search engine. I get the best results with Google.

That's pretty funny!! Nice deal on the tractor though! You could probably sell either the bush hog or the tractor for almost the total purchase price and get the other one free.

Thanks all Still going through the tractor trying to fix all the little issues i can find. I had to fix a bad wiring job lots of live wires just dangling around and no lights worked. Got those fixed gave it a good Pressure wash and then hand wash looks even better. Got the air filter, oil filter and oil changed flushed the radiator added fresh antifreeze. Added Ethanol shield to the fuel and changed the battery terminals. All the fluids and filters were last changed in 1991... but, the motor oil was surprisingly clean. The hydraulic fluid on the other hand is in bad condition super thin and white. Ordered a Hydraulic filter but, what brand of fluid should i put in this tractor something from Case-Ih? Money is no object at the moment i want to use the best any help would be great.

Hy-Tran from Case/IH, or equivalent. It will run you $76.60 for 5 gallon pail. I use TSC premium fluid @ 34.99 for 5 gal. I've been using it for 20+ years with no problems. Choice is yours.

Personally I like the TSC premium fluid also. Run it in all of our older tractors. Good fluids that meet the standards listed on the pail. Just a thought. I'm not crazy about that cherry bomb muffler. Straight stainless. She will sing to you.
