1964 mf65 - does single hose hydraulic ram "self bleed"? and other silly questions.

G'Day,
After abusing it very badly for years ,lifting, pushing and general misuse around the place, the
seals on my MF loader attachment (eg the FEL was also made by MF) finally spat the dummy and
let go. Fair call, I certainly cant whinge about that as they are as far as I can tell the originals.

So, I have removed, cleaned replaced seals etc on both side rams and on the bucket ram.
Both side rams are single acting rams (although they both have a second point for hose to be fitted??)
and the bucket ram is a double hose.

I am about to fill up the diff with Universal Tractor Oil so that can also feed the hydraulics, but I have a couple questions first:-

1) Do the single hose rams 'self bleed" when first installed?
I assume start up and wait a while at idle then maybe action rams to release air to hydraulic tank??
I cant really see how to do it otherwise...

2) I am currently filling through a pissy little pipe just near the dipstick under the seat (right side of tractor)
surely there is a better, easier way of doing this?? Is the cap near the gearsticks going to put fluid into the rear diff etc?
If not where do I fill the bastard?? (it was easy to get the oil out!!):confused3:

3) Expressing this may be the solution to my son, he, trying to help, has put about 10 litres of UTO into that point, is
that any problem? I assume as it is transmission fluid as well it should be OK??:confused2:

4) my MF65 has a diesel motor (4cyl perkins I think) its a ripper... is there anything I should keep an eye on about that motor\
as if it buggered up it would really break my heart!! If I know of anything I should watch for then I know I'll feel more like she'll be alright.

Hopefully the above arent all stupid questions,
Thanks in advance for any help!

(obviously all the above problems are multiplied by the fact we're hanging upside down off the planet down here in Australia! )
Cheers!

It would depend on the cyl port location.

You can bleed air from any cyl if you know how.

If the cyl port is at the top most part of cyl position, it will self bleed.

Re: 1964 mf65 - does single hose hydraulic ram "self bleed"? and other silly question

The way I bleed a cyl and line (SA cyl) is to have the cyl all the way in with hose unhooked. Have a buddy run the valve and do it real easy and slow. Have the hose in a bucket and when oil comes out of hose hook to the cyl. I do not tighten down and have you buddy open the valve real slow and when you see oil again tighten fitting. There you have a SA cyl with no air in it. DA cyls you have both hoses off and do the above then run cyl out then repeat the above for the other hose, then you have no air.

Cap by gearshifts is the fill location for the trans / differential. It should have two drain plugs to remove all oil. You should be using the proper oil instead of straight automatic transmission fluid. I believe it should meet masseys. M1129A specification. Some older versions use a mineral oil. Search this forum for oil specifications or post question in the Massey vintage / classic forum. If the tractor has multipower it is very IMPORTANT to use the correct fluid. Multiower pumps and clutch packs are very fussy. Trans should hold about 8 gallons.

I see you are using uto. Read one part of post that mentioned transmission fluid and I thought you meant automatic transmission fluid. My mistake.

No experience with a 65 but I would think premium engine oil and filter. Clean fuel and filters. Clean air filters along with clean trans / differential oil will be the most important things to keep it running. I don't think the 65 has a transmission filter.
Better responses will come from the Massey classic / vintage forum.

Re: 1964 mf65 - does single hose hydraulic ram "self bleed"? and other silly question

Did some more checking and found "Big Deans Massey Ferguson website" ( a Massey guru now deceased).

He recommends for tractors prior to the 100 series use spec. M1103 80/90 minerial oil. He also states that these tractors can use the M1129A that I mentioned in an earlier post if the hydraulics are in good shape. Hope this helps rather than confuse.

Hope this clears up my confusion.
