I broke and lost both adjustable brakes actuating rods and had to purchase two more. My question is, I never saw what type of nut was on the end and I can't tell from the manual/diagram if the adjusting nut on the end is a special one, or will any nut work. Thanks

Have to tie you down as to the actuating rod you are talking about.

Might it be key#1 in this schematic?
And if so, #15 is a locking nut, looks to be 5/16. But need to hear back from you...

Also have a pic of the brake system with more linkage shown..

Or might it be the yoke on the end which is the adjusting part?

Looks like 26 and 27 go on that yoke part #21. 26 is a 3/8 nut and expect it is a lock nut.. #27 is part # M949T and expect it is almost like an acorn nut, but don't know for sure. Likely has something to do with the wear from levering the brakes.
If that doesn't fit your parts/repair, shout out.. as I could be wrong and don't want to lead others wrong if it doesn't work for you.

Green Parts store shows about $6 for that part 27.

Spec's for M949T are shown in photo below. It appears nut is still available from JD.

I'm surprised at that picture for that part,
I'm not a John deere man by any means but I would have expected that to be more of a half round ball with threads that ride in that brake actuating arm.
It looks like #26 would be a plain nut for locking the adjusting ball.

IMHO sometimes the photo's displayed on JD specification page aren't exactly displayed 100% correct. I agree this nut should have one side beveled out not flat.

Thanks to all the replies. Tx Jim regarding the one side being beveled thats what I was looking for when said is it a special nut.

Good thing is that beveled nut is still available from JD at an affordable price.
