I'm doing a little more restoration on my 861D and would like to replace the Glow Plugs and Glow Plug Solenoid, maybe even some of the wiring if necessary. I've search the forum and net looking for a part number for the Glow Plug Solenoid but I haven't had any luck.

Would appreciate it if someone could confirm if the Glow Plug Solenoid and the Starter Solenoid (NAPA ST542) are the same. If not, what Solenoid do I need for the Glow Plugs?

If you get the correct voltage and wire it correctly a solenoid is pretty much a solenoid. In the automotive sense it uses a small current (like through your key switch) to control a larger current (like a starter or in this case glow plugs). You can also use a heavy duty spring loaded toggle switch to power the glow plugs manually.

It would seem that the starter would pull more amps than the glow plugs, so a starter solenoid would work. Alternates for NAPA should work fine for about half the cost.

Thanks. I was hoping they would be the same. The starter solenoid I bought today from NAPA (ST542) cost about $27.00.

I also learned today that WIX makes fuel filters for NAPA. The WIX part number for my 861D is 33165. The NAPA part number is 3165. They are Identical.

A solenoid is not pretty much a solenoid. While they all look similar, they can function differently. Some are voltage actuated, and some are ground actuated. Solenoids.JPG
