Been looking for an older tractor to play around with and ran across an Oliver Super 55. For the most part, Tractor is in pretty good condition. It will need a steering wheel and a few minor things but is in working shape now. Owner said he cut hay with it about 2 months ago and then parked it. When I looked at it today, it started without using a choke on about third crank and ran smooth. Lift and pto worked fine. Only thing that bothered me was on underside of tractor. there is a small inspection plate missing that covers the adjustment for the pto clutches. there was some grass and dirt inside there that shouldnt be but it can be cleaned out. I can buy the Oliver for $1200.00. So what do you guys think, buy or move on?

When you say "playing around", what are your intentions? The price is low, if everything works right it could be a good way to get started until you are more sure of your needs.
It's a little bigger than an 8N Ford, which is what many of us ran for a first tractor.

I would get that steering wheel ASAP though, it's a rather handy option. :D

I've mowed a lot of hay with a super 55. Live lift. Live PTO. Geeat tractor.

Don't worry about debris in the PTO clutch housing. It's a dry disc clutch.

4cyl overhead valve engine. 6 forward speeds. 2 reverse speeds. All done with one lever.

That is a good price if it is in decent shape. Them old Oliver's are good machines. Unless something is glaringly wrong, I would heavily consider it.

I would be using it to grade drive way and use it with a 5 ft rotary cutter. Mostly light duty stuff. It has a steering wheel now but it is weathered and cracked pretty bad.

I test drove it and ran it through all the gears. It shifted smooth and felt like it locked into all the gears good. He had an old single Oliver plow I think Im going to try and get also.

$1,200 is what I pay for periodic hydraulic fluid, engine oil and filter changes, + tractor pick up and return, at my Kubota dealer.

Go for it.

what about the availability of parts?. it's a very old tractor to be using it, would you need to have parts custom made because the dealers stopped carrying them for decades?. "Oliver tractors were manufactured until 1976 when the last Oliver 2255 rolled down the assembly line. The silver-colored White tractors had replaced the Oliver tractor. Throughout the many mergers and corporation maneuvering, nothing remains of the original Oliver company, which began its legacy in South Bend, Indiana.".

Oliver Parts - Yesterday's Tractors

They are an easy company to do business with, and supply parts for a lot of vintage tractors. I bought a water pump and a few other things for the TO35, it was much easier to get the parts than it's been to find time to put them on.
