1948 8 n ford
Have 8n ford that I bought last year and it ran good until I parked it for the winter. Started fine this spring until I tried plowing. Made one round and it quit so started checking and found a melted coil. Replaced coil , points, dist cap, condenser, and added a resister to 12v to coil. Started fine and plowed garden and ran spring tooth through until the last pass when it quit like it was shot. Now no spark to plugs but has 12v to coil and 12v through coil checked points, with a file and gaped . checked timing which has not changed. checked for grounded wire on condenser and points. Any ideas will be much appreciated ..

IF it is a 12v conversion on a front mount.. then you need 1 of the 2 following setups.

oem 6v coil.. oem ballast resistor and 8ne10306 conversion resistor

or

new style '12v' 2.5 ohm coil, oem ballast resistor.


depending on what points you used.. they may be shot. if they are tisco or tractor supply.. or bought online from many o fthe suppliers that use low cost tisco.. I'd repalce them with som high quality standard ignition blue streak pints.. borg warner.. echlin premium points.. etc.

the cheap ones don't gap well and close up.

now. reinstal and regap to .015

check for spark.

Heading to town to find parts. Question !! can a distributor shaft be worn enough to not let you adjust points?

yes.. the bushing can wear and make for eccentric point gaps.

cruddy 5$ tisco points can be made so poorly that they will not adjust , right out of the package, untill you file the holes open.

Well owe a big thankyou for helping me through this ELEC problem. Wasn't so much elec as it was me trying to save a nickle on an old ford. Got the blue streak points and found that they actually have adjustment and not a worn dist. shaft. Main problem was my coil and I guess cheap points can ruin a coil if you can't adjust the points to a true .015. It has all new parts and good ones so it should last me for a long time. And I know more about it than before. I wanted to put a zipper on the dist. for the amount of times I removed it. I have another problem with the Hyd lift if you are willing to try.. Lift arms raise up and down with no trouble in the power troll position on the lever under the seat. But if you switch the lever to normal nothing works. any help is great..

are you saying that with the lever up in position controll it works? but not in draft?

or with the lever down in draft it works? but not in position control?

2 different issues.

With the lever in the "Draft Control" position, the depth control lever should adjust "how much load it takes to lift the implement"... The lift "sensor" on my NAA is the top link mount on the back of the tractor... Load is when the plow digs into the soil... the lift lever will increase or reduce the amount of load before the plow "lifts up" to reduce the load.... If the plow does not lift when all the adjustments have been made, move the top link up in the mount to the middle or upper most mounting hole..... the upper most hole is the most sensitive on my NAA....
