Hey ya'll; I'm a newbie to this forum which I found while searching the 'net for the difference between 90w gear oil vs hydraulic oil. I already bought a 5gal. bucket of hydraulic oil from my local farmer's supply store, but I just saw on the Ferguson TE 20 DVD (which I ordered from Scotland) that I need 50W motor oil or 90W gear oil in the tranny/hydraulic system. Therefore, I'm not sure if I can use the hydraulic oil that I already purchased.

keep inmind.. i'm not a ferguson collector.. though I have plenty of antique tractors of different color and flavor.. most of them being ford.. etc...however.. the ferguson te/to 20 uses a common sump hyds, rear end and tranny, very similar in setup to a ford 9n/2n and to a large extent.. the 8n.

in fact the hydraulic pump on a fergy t0 20 for all intents and purposes is essentially the same as used inthe ford 9n / 2n.. though the 2 have top cover differences int he hyd cyl / piston area.

Many ford owners use either 90wt gl1 / gl3 oil, 80w90 gl4/5 oil that is MT1 rated and or states 'yellow metal safe', or a UTF fluid meeting the ford spec M2C134 (D)

Now.. that said.. one might thing the UTF should be fine for the fergy.. and I think it would do no harm.. however.. in talking to MANY fergy owners.. I have multiple times that the fergy really does like the gear oil vs the UTF fluid.

Napa sells a 90wt gl1 gear oil as part number 65-205 for the 5g pail you need.

tractor supply sells what is likely a 90wt gl3 oil that is marketed as for ford trannies from 39-52

lastly.. many suppliers sell a gl4/5 80w90 oil that is marked as 'yellow metal safe'

I'd stick to one of those, with the gl-1 being my last choice.. and the gl3 or the 4/5 yellow metal safe ( specifially ) being my top choices.

... said the ford guy... :)

Thank you for sharing this info with me Soundguy. I'll see if I can exchange the hyd oil for the gl4/gl5.:cool2:

yellow metal safe gl4/gl5 only.... ( many yellow metal safe oils carry a MT1 rating if you read the label ).

good luck.

any of the mentioned will work. the utf likely would do NO damage.. though you might hear more trans whine and gear noise.. and if the hyds are leaky or weak already.. they will get weaker.. plus if you have leaky axle seas or trans seals.. they may leak more... that's not specifically an oil fault. that's a weak seal fault that a thinner oil exploits :) luckilly seals are made to be repalced.. and hyds to be rebuilt.

again.. good luck
