Hi all... I'm looking for a possible fix for a 1715 4X4 that the shifter locks up/stuck between gears.. I can use 2nd & Reverse for several hours along with low & med range until it locks up... Then I need to open the transmission up & line up the gears... If I use 1st or 3rd with 2nd or Reverse, it may lock up at any time.... Then I need to open up the tramission and line up the gears again.. I was able to check the one detent spring & ball and they look fine...

It appears the transmission on 4X4's are different then 2 wheel drive models.. I hope to get time to check play in the shifter today...

I'm in hopes that someone can chime in with a possible fix??

Thanks,

I did have a same issue with my 1700, 2WD. In my case it the detent ball and the shift boss were stuck. I did not have to transmission cover as I was able to loosen the shifter arm holder and juggle the handle to put thing where needed to be. It might be entirely different than you set up. I suggest you go to NH site and look at the transmission and cover and shifter stick configuration to see if you have a detent mechanism.

JC, The 4X4 transmission is some what different compared to the 2 wd drive.. I can get to one detent ball & spring and they look fine... The shift rods are stacked and the other detent is set up between the rods... I'm going to drop the FEL and try to inspect the shifter arms through the inspection plate... I may just split the tractor, replace the shifter arms and get the clutch rebuilt locally...

Thanks for chiming in...

captain,

I knew the shifter rod is different with my 1700 than yours as I have dual rods, one for the range and one for the gear. I knew there got to be a detent mechanism somewhere. I hope you get it fixed without having to split your tractor.

I have a 2110 and won't put it in range 4. It will lock up about 25% of the time. Been that way 14 years. Have heard many TBN members with same problem in Ford XX00, XX10 and XX15 series. Might be a trans wear problem.

Clutch started to slip, so I split the tractor yesterday. Clutch was still about 30% and useable. The flywheel was glazed and the pilot bearing was noisey with the clutch pedal in. I originally thought the throw-out bearing was making the noise, but it's in good condition. I did find that the throw-out bearing hub was hanging up and may be the reason the clutch was slipping. The return spring was stretched and the grease was dried out quite a bit. I bought the tractor used in 04 and discovered a PTO issue under heavy load. I didn't need the PTO than, since I had another tractor too. I'm thinking the glaze on the flywheel caused the PTO issue. Todays project is to remove the glaze off the flywheel, clean the protective coating off the new preasure-plate, load the clutch, replace the return spring on the throw-out bearing hub and inspect the PTO. I'll also open the transmission and look for the missing dip-stick. It was missing when I bought the tractor. Time to head down to my shop.
