I purchased a GC1720TLB this spring with MMM and I am really happy with it. I also have a New Holland T4.75 that I got last summer as an upsize from my JD 5205. I have 15 acres that I was baling for hay but have decided to stop and will just bushhog now with a 6 footer. My T4.75 is a little big for what I do. My dad borrows it to do yard jobs and the NH is way too big for yard work. I am considering the 1700 series to replace it. Was thinking somewhere in the 1749-1759 range. I havent went to the dealer yet to lay my eyes on it but my main concerns are as follows:
1.) pulling a 6 ft bush hog is probably the most work it will do and I have one part of my place that is very steep.
2) still small enough to get in the yard if my dad needs it.
3.)will the R4 tires perform well on steep hill, my GC does fine but its alot smaller.
4.)physical size/weight difference from my current T4.75

Just wanting some of your all's first hand experience or thoughts.

Thanks in advance

Thanks but I got to go to the dealer Saturday and I think I will keep what I have. The 1759 is a little smaller than I expected. It had a couple issues that the dealer did not care or want to acknowledge. First was when using the power reverser and shifting forward it was smooth and gradual but when going to reverse it was immediate and would spin the rear tires. Secondly some alarm went off 3 times while I used it that he had no answer for other than, "turn it off and back on" to remedy it. I didn't see the trade from what I have to the MF.

Sigh. The lack of familiarity with the product should be a red flag for the manufacturer rep, the dealer, the sales manager and that sales person you spoke to.

It's funny that you noticed how small the 1759 was, too. Our local dealer had one on the lot and I couldn't believe how small it was. It literally looked the same size as my 1643, like they used the exact same chassis, only with a smaller hood.

I'm so glad I got a 1600 series tractor.

Well im 6'-4, 235lbs, my dad is 6'-4 and 275lbs and it's pretty cramped. Why they are turning tractors into automobiles I have no idea. Too many bells and whistles and don't get me started on the emissions crap. That hood looks like it's 6' long and it's crammed full of garbage. My NH T4.75 is Tier III which is one reason I jumped on it before it went Tier IV. And Eric you are right, nothing makes me feel more gung-ho about buying a tractor when the salesman knows less about it than I do. He did call me back and said he "thought" it was low on fuel was the reason for the alarm. I remember it having over 1/4 tank but I said OK to avoid another brainless discussion. I think I'm going to find me a late 60's , early 70's tractor in the 30-40 hp range to restore to fill the gap between my 2 tractors. Gives me a reason to stay at the barn and my son loves older tractors.

Your questions:
1. It will run a 6ft bush hog with ease but consider the 1749 is a 3cyl, the 1754,58 and 59 is a 4cyl
2. You have answered your own questions here at this point
3. The R4s and 4WD will handle the hills as well as the GC does.
4. The weight on these will fall between 4000-4500 pounds.
If the dealer knows what he is doing he can make an electronic adjustment to correct the reverse engagement. The alarm was most likely a calibration that was needed to be done in regards to one of the various sensors, this is not uncommon on a new unit and the dealer should address these things before putting out on the lot.
No argument from me on the emissions but Uncle Sam is driving that and all manufacturers will have to comply. Can't disagree with the older tractors statement either. Simplicity and ease of repair plus it will give you and your son a reason to hang out in the barn during the winter.
