My 1700 is getting hot. The temp guage eventually rises to max as I'm working, like mowing with bush hog. The thermostat has been replaced, it has plent of a/f, and the radiator pre-screen isnt clogged, nor is the radiator.

I was looking at it last night, and noticed the bearing in the water pump fan/belt pulley shaft seemed like they were shot (was able to move the fan shaft quite a bit), but it has never leaked any a/f. So I pulled the pump off. I pulled the plate on back of the pump off, the impeller looked fine, but the bearings were very loose.

My question is even though the impeller looked fine, could the bad bearings be causing my overheating problem? Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Bad bearings will eventually cause the seal to fail.. giving you a good bit of AF leak.. then if you ignore that.. the fan is likely to eat a hole inthe radiator.. etc.

Does the radiator flow well. Drain it and save the af in a clean bucket.. flush it with a garden hose.. will the radiator flow the full flow of the hose top to bottom?

I've replaced a few water pumps on my vehicles, so I know the seal is next to go after the bearing, kinda surprised the seal hasnt gone yet.

Good point on flushing the radiator, I'll give that a shot this evening, and see if it flows ok.
Thanks

Are you sure the thermostat is facing the correct way? I know it sounds obvious, but its happened to me occasionally by mistake even after 40 years of working on motors, so it can happen.

Ummm, pretty sure, got me thinking now. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Yeah, I'm sure it's ok. But if the pump doesnt fix it, and if the rad doesn appear to be cloged, I'll definately double check it.
Thanks

Hi Blue,Ford 1700s just run hot. It's the nature of the beast. The radiator is just too small. I had one for 9 years and it always ran hot when pulling a 5 foot rotary cutter.Just traded it for a Case IH and my over heating problems ceased.

I just can't help but think something is wrong. Either something is plugged or the thermostat is bad or installed backwards.

Are you also sure the temp sensor and gage are working correctly? Usually they go bad by either not working at all or indicating low rather than high, but I'd see if you can't check that also.

Even after having the radiator cleaned, the temp gage ,water pump and thermostst replaced. It still ran hot, overheating to the point of burning the valves up. thats why I had to trade it in. Not trying to be mean, but you are jusyt going to have to live with it.

How long have you had the 1700? Did this just start or was it gradual? Are you working it harder? Did you have the radiator cleaned by a shop?

A few years back my 1910 started gradually running hotter than when new. I had the radiator boiled out by a shop and that helped some but it still runs a bit hotter than when new. I priced a new radiator and I can still get one for $1000.00 but I'm not about to do that. I have replaced the pump, hoses, thermostat too. None of those seemed to help much.

for me, heating is only an issue when brush hogging. That is one reason I bought a new tractor for brush hogging. I also can leave the brush hog on all summer now. I'll never sell the 1910 though. It's been with me since new.

My 1720 used to run too cool. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Maybe putting on a radiator from a 1920 or 1720 would do the trick. How about checking the pump to for impleller wear?
