Long story short, have oil leaking from bottom of control valve, decide to take it off tractor (have had it off before, PITA). All threads look good so nothing cross threaded. Pulled the covers off these springs, one was dry and the other had what looked like water in oil glopped all over it. Could be it was old grease. Ques. here is, are those springs suppose to have grease on them and if so any particular type?

Another Ques. here -- has anyone else ever taken the control vavle off? What's the trick in getting it back on and all buttoned up? If it was a PITA to take off it's a ROYAL PITA to get it back together. All that stiff plumbing make it tough to get the connectors lined up and spun on.

I have taken some apart that were packed with white lithium grease. This may be what you found.

Did you find your leak? The fittings that the hoses screw onto have o rings where they mate with the control valve.

I did not see any obvious signs of leaks and I have replaced those "O" rings you mentioned. I'm curious as to why one of those springs was dry and the other had goop on it. I'm thinking that's where my leak is (the goopy one didn't leak and the dry one leaked and flushed the grease off). There is an O ring at the base of the spoolers. I'm going to replace that today, grease those springs and button it all up. Crossing my fingers.

Fred, I've never worked on my dual-valve for the loader, but I have had the cover off of a remote valve that was sticking. It was a rusty mess as shown below. After cleaning it and putting on some lithium grease, I've had no more problems.

I think for re-assy, you need some TFE paste or at least hyd fluid to lubricate the threads at each connection so you can get them very tight. If the spool is leaking into the return spring area, I think that's going to be a much harder leak to fix and will require disassy of the completed valve. Heck, I think I'd put up with a small leak before doing that.:confused2:

I pulled the spoolers out and replaced the O ring associated with each. Getting the O rings in was mildly tricky but getting the spools back in was the hard part. With the new O ring it was a tight fit. Didn't want to force it too much and risk nipping the new O ring. Gently turned and tapped the spool, greased up the spring ends, buttoned it up, and put it back on the tractor. All went realitavely well, only a few hang ups. So far, so good.

I believe that spring that was clean was the side leaking. The oil blowing by the O ring flushed out all the grease. With no gaskets on those little cans over the springs, it just ran out. I'll put a load on it next week and see what happens.

It wasn't a huge leak but it wasn't a small one either. A cup or better an hour. Left trails every where I went. Had to be fixed.

Now, on to the next fix on this overworked, hurting tractor.
