Hi all, I have (R4) 16.9-24 on one of my 4400's and I need some R1 tires to pull a 12' JD wheel disc I bought. The 4400 is 64hp. I came across these 14.9-24 (R1's) for $400 and I'm having a hard time passing them up. Will they work good and fit the rim? Tractor data says the 4000 series tractors take
Ag front:7.50-16
Ag rear:13.6-38
14.9-30
16.9-26
16.9-30

I'd use them. Ground speed will be just a bit slower though, and a narrower tire means more compaction though..

I've been told that 13.5 and 15.5 are the same height as well as !4.9 and 16.9's being the same height. You shouldn't have any trouble with speeds being different. Ideally the tire should be mounted on a narrower rim but I doubt if it will make much of a difference.

Thanks for the help guys. I passed on them. The CL ad said they were 2ply. Before I left I looked for some Firestone R1 (2ply) tires and couldn't find any, they start at 4ply. I was hoping the 2 was mistaken for an 8. It was a stretch but I had to check them out. They were brand new. I'm sure a 4ply tire would blow up with a 3200lb lift on my 3pt.

your lift won't blow up a 4 ply tire and why can't you pull your disc with r4's

R4's are out of the question. I don't think I'd make it 20' in the field pulling this disc. The guy I bought the disc from pulled them out of the weeds with a 4x4 JD 5210 and had a heck of a time. Finally got them out on the 3rd pull with 3' of slack in the chain each time. They sunk in the ground a little bit but even after he got them on level ground his R4 tires spun until he stopped. I'm happy I passed on the tires. I looked up the rating on a 14.9-24 R1 (4ply) from Titan. Each tire is rated for 2200lbs @ max pressure. My tractor is 5000lbs plus 1500lb loader and 3200lbs on the 3pt.

if you already have the disc why not try it with what you have

I agree. Try it with what you have.

Pulling from it mounted on the 3ph (even better with draft control) is alot different than yanking from a chain.

... I will agree tentatively that R4s are out of the question. They suck at traction in comparison to R1.

The R1s you have in mind are a little small, true, however I would never pay attention to the load ratings unless running at hi speed on a hard surface or using them highly loaded over stubble or in the woods. Just pump them up so that there are 2 bars touching with the load.
