With the dry season rapidly approaching here in Northern CA, I was wondering how much of a fire hazard the design of the exhaust system on these tractors presents?

There is really nothing to worry about. The great thing about diesels is that the exhaust temps are MUCH lower than gasoline engines. There is little chance of the exhaust starting a fire. I'm not sure you could start a fire if you left it parked in dry grass and left it running.:)

That is a great question HangtownMatt, as I also have a 2615. Years ago I was working for a tree farm. The owner asked me to do some rototilling up by his house. I was driving an old JD with a top mounted stack. After a couple of passes I heard a loud roaring noise behind me. Flames were moving toward a large stack of railroad ties, covered by a plastic tarp. Before I could gather my thoughts, the creosote ladened pile had ignited and the 60 foot tree next to them was in flames as well. The rest of the story takes to long to tell, and is a bit off topic. Nevertheless, what had happened here, according to the U.S. Forestry fire investigator, was the tractor threw a spark out of the exhaust pipe.

So, I wonder if the 15 series has a spark arrestor installed in its exhaust system?

And yet another good question. Hopefully, we will get a response.

I was out using my tractor today. It was probably in the 60's and very windy; felt colder. After a good while I put my hand down in front of the exhaust. Felt pretty hot to me. It doesn't take much to start a fire around these parts come June, July, August ... Sparks are a complete no no. In fact, I will not use a metal blade mower much after the 1st of June.

On a tanget but related issue I was exercising my new 3215 this weekend and inhaled diesel exaust as I rode. As a motorhead I enjoy the smell of a good internal combustion engine (especially with a trace of caster oil) but diesel is another matter. I wonder why they place the exaust port in the front of the tractor instead of behind.

If you look at 90% of the compact tractors on the market today, they all have the exhaust up front and down low.
They put it down low for visibility purposes.

Matt, I have been told that the mufflers on the 15 series have built in spark arrestors, yet I don't see a notation of such on the mufflers, so it leaves me less than 100% sure. John Deere has a little spark arrestor that can slip over the end of the exhaust pipe. For $25 of so, it seems like good insurance for those of us out here in the west.

Matt,

Did you get that at Sierra Tractor?

I have not been on your site for a bit. Not sure of the make of the trencher, it was built in China. It is at the side of the house if you want to swing by and look at it (as is the mixer). The 2415 is out back.

I agree that this would be a good idea, especially on the 24 as it sits much lower (had not thought about getting one until now).

While the cost might seem like a lot, if you know SuperTrap you would know that their stuff is top notch (and will last).

Glad to hear you are having so much fun with the 2615.

Rick,

Yes I got it at Sierra Tractor. And yes it is a quality piece. Took all of about ten seconds to istall. Simple enough that you could put it on when needed and take it off when not. Trenton, their head mechanic, said to just to leave it on all the time. They are a great dealership. Family run, friendly, and honest. They treat me as though I bought the tractor direct from them.

AchingBack - I asked about the Jonh Deere unit Dave recommended. They were not aware of it. But they know Dave ... he's their distributor. I just went with the SuperTrapp because Sierra Tractor has never steered me wrong. Very good people !

Matt

P.S. Hey Rick (aka BullDog). I can hear the speedway races as I type.

No, Sierra Tractor in Shingle Springs, CA. The owner's name is Brian. Never figured there would be two Sierra Tractors.
