terramite 3-15
Hi everyone looking for advice
I have a terramite T3.14 and it has a 14 hp kohler(single cylinder)(3600 rpm) on it. I have a New 10 hp Apollo diesel engine( turns 3600 rpms) and was wonder what you think. Will this be enough power? Diesel is suppost to have more torque, better fuel economy. I Hate to put it on if its not going to work right. So jump in with your thoughts.
Thanks Sam

Single cylinder air cooled diesels are VERY noisy. Do some searching on youtube for tractors with them in.

Might change your mind just by that.

The single cylinder kohlers made good torque too, so 10hp might be a step backwards overall.

I appreciate your time. I did what you said and to be honest with you it not that much louder than my kohler . In fact i ran my apollo diesel next to the kohler a little noiser yes but not by much. the owners manual shows the diesel has almost double torque of the kohler. Id like to put a 2 cylinder Kohler diesel engine in it but lots more money.
Thanks for the reply

Sam, you said the diesel "turns 3600 rpm," but didn't say if it is at it's peak torque at that rpm. I think the Terramite is designed to run with the engine at a constant rpm in its maximum power curve. Sometimes (mostly) gasoline engines develop their power at a higher rpm than the diesel. For my rough rule-of-thumb, I consider horsepower as the ability to gain rpm under load and torque as the ability to maintain rpm under load (for the purists, I know this is not accurate). Therefore, if your diesel engine has similar torque or more than the Kohler at 3600 rpm, it will run the hydraulic pumps and HST transmission without lugging down. Actually, the Terramite hydraulic pump is rated for 4 gpm at 2000 rpm, and around 1800 psi. If your power curve peak on the diesel is between 2000 and 3600, I think you will be fine. I suspect the diesel will have maximum rpm and torque around 2600-2800 rpm. That should be plenty to run both the hydraulic pump and HST transmission. So, you will have pretty low power at low rpm, but if you put that engine at 2500-3000 rpm and operate there normally, you should be able to do most things without lugging the engine.

Jinman thanks for replying, I guess I need to do more research as I don't know the answer to your question (diesel "turns 3600 rpm," but didn't say if it is at it's peak torque at that rpm) great question! Alot of things I didn't know that's why the survey. Thanks Again
