DP,
I test drove a 1435 John Deere Front Mount with Cab up at Brindleys Auction Serivices. It had the hardside deluxe cab on with Heater in the cab. It was in fair shape and had the 60" rear discharge deck on it. The rear discharge deck worked pretty well, but the mower itself was a former Munipalicity unit and was worked hard. Overall, the 1400/1500 Series Front mounts were an improvement over the F1145, in fact if I could find a decent used 1445 with 60" side discharge, I would consider upgrading, but for now I will keep the F1145.
As for the 1400/1500 series Front Mounts with Cabs, my Uncle works for Grand Cove Estates in GrandBend Ontario, and they bought a 1445 4X4 Front mount with Heated Cab.. It also has AC. They Really like their 1445, and have a 2 stage SnowBlower for the front of it, as well as the 72" side Discharge deck and the material Collection System. They are really impressed with the quality of cut that the 72" deck leaves. I think they have a little over 1100 hrs on their 1445 Front Mount, they bought it New about 4 or 5 years ago. My Uncle runs its a lot, and says you need the 4X4 on the 1445 for blowing snow.
The Big differences between the 1435 and 1535 is Horse Power. The 1435 is the Entry Level John Deere Diesel Front Mount with 26Hp. The 1535 has about 31hp. The Biggest model in the 1500 series is the 1565, which has 38hp.
Of course, Deere also offers the 1420, 28hp Gas Front mount mower which is a bit cheaper, but the extra $$ for the Diesel is worth it over all.
Obviously the 2wd 1435 or 1535 will turn sharper, but the 4X4 helps out if your doing any snow removal with it, or cutting wet areas.
72" Deck is awsome, as its offset on the Front Mount, allowing you to trim up close to trees and other objects, where as it might be more difficult with a mid-mount Mower.
I also work for a local Conservation Authrority that used to run Ford Front Mount mowers that were 4X4, and could really trim up close to trees and tight spaces as the deck was out front. They never got stuck as much as their current ZTRs do in wet conditions as they had the 4X4.
The Conservation Authority has since moved to Kubota ZD 28's and now are running 997 Deere Z-tracks with 72" side and 60" Rear discharge decks. While those 997's can really mow a lot of grass in a hurry( and are a lot more reliable then the ZD 28's they used to have), they still can't cut close enough in some spots and usually get stuck pretty ease when the grass is wet. The Conservation Authority mows a lot of grass, so we are always cutting, rain or shine to keep up. I tried to convince them to buy a Front Mower with 4X4( as we need it) but they went with the Z-tracks to save money. I do really like the 997's, they cut a lot of grass in a hurry and if your on flat ground, those 997's work great. We have some slopes we mow with the 997's, and they tend to be a bit unstable on some slopes. The old Front mounts they had were more stable on the slopes, I don't know, I really don't like mowing slopes with ZTRs.
Another option would be a decent used 1445 Front mount with 4X4, I know Huron has a few, ones in fair shape, actually its a 1435 2wd with over 3,000 hrs on it. Lower the hrs the better.
