According to several yanmar parts suppliers the u-joint for the 1401d front driveline is not available nor is it slated for production again. Guess what?... I've thought of boring out the yolks and fitting a similar sized joint in it but can't find any parts data for u-joints by dimension in order to select and buy one. Additionally the current joint is staked in, no spring retaining clip. I've heard of knurled cups used to get away from having to make slots in the yolks- of which I do not have the machinery nor capability of doing. Has anybody got any suggestions for me?

Check with Hoye. They advertise on this board.

Thanks Norm but they wrote me back saying that they don't deal in Yanmar parts.

I appreciate your posting but one of the suppliers that I was refering to was Hoye. Unfortunately, they were not able to help.

Those joints are a real problem right now. If it were me I would take a trip to the local bearing store. They will have all the dimensions you could ever want. We have taken a yolk/joint set and had them machined onto the old shafts before on some tillers. It works good and I think it cost us about $60 in machine work and $75 in parts. Not real cheap but maybe the only real alternative to running 2wd.

I am well aware of that. I thought you were looking for one of similar size.

I found a similar size at a local driveline shop. It is an old datsun size and uses inside clips to hold it in. This solves a major hurdle for me in cutting grooves inside the cup holders in the yolk. All I have to do is mill the inside dimension to the specs they gave me and bore the holes in the yolks. I have one of those 3 in 1 lathe/mill/drill machines and can only get to within .002 in. so I might have to take it somewhere to get it reamed to the +- .0003 that they said I would have to have in order not to pinch the needle bearings yet still have a friction fit. Through the use of Tractor by net, options are opening up. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
