Because it didn't happen around a tractor it's just tragic, it's the sacred institution of sports, can't touch that.

I've noticed that too, that anytime someone does something that's not specified in their tractors owners manual they are branded idiots. I've even tried to come to some's defence but have been mugged myself.

This accident is kind of a freak thing, but does happen. There was some talk in the article about heart guards, I've never heard of that before, and I had kids playing baseball just a few years ago.

Very sad indeed. But life is a gamble and things and accidents do happen, we can't put kids inside a lexon protective bubble to protect them forever. Then the other side of the coin, society does everything to protect them when they are adolescents but when they are 18 we send them off to war to die, go figure.

I am, admittedly, a safety freak...and I readily admit I've done some darn stupid things in my life...

That said, we on TBN are much more aware of our machine capabilities and dangers then the average guy. We're interested enough to join and frequent an internet forum dedicated to this equipment.
So, if one on TBN knowingly ignores the basic safety rules and usage of safety equipment (my personal peeve is the number of folks who leave their ROPS folded), then posts how they had an accident...well, I'm afraid I have little sympathy for them.

Back to topic...definitely a tragic occurrence and the child's family has my deepest condolences.

I don't take safety for granted, being a contractor I've had no accidents in 28 years working in extreme environments sometimes. From 180 feet off the ground to 30 feet underground.

But I don't think I've ever worn my seat belt on the tractor, driving around the level parts of my yard at 5 MPH. people with their ROPS folded don't bother me much. Mine is always up and I have a canopy, might be a little tricky dismounting if I needed to in a hurry. Probably should wear the seat belt, but I'm very comfortable, knowing the limitations of my machine.

There is another website that I read about things happening in FLA. The owner of the website went off on a rant about swimming in FLA lakes because there is an amoeba in SOME FLA lakes. If you catch the amoeba or maybe it is more accurate to say, if the amoeba catches you, you MIGHT die.

I got in a "discussion" about his fear mongering. :) Should people know about the amoeba? Absolutely. Should they run from the water like people did in the 70's fearing a shark attack? No!.

I bring this up for a couple of reasons. One, the amoeba that was mentioned, exists in warm lakes and ponds all over the south. So if you go swimming ,and a day or two later, get flu like symptoms, go to the doc and mention the fresh water amoeba to get treatment. I think antibiotics takes care of the problem. A teenager south of us in NC picked up some flesh eating bug that danged near killed him so it is not just the amoeba.

I grew up swimming almost every day in a lake in FLA as a kid, as did so many people back then, so I really resented the fear mongering.

As part of the "discussion" I looked up how many kids die playing sports every year. The number that sticks in my head was that about 35 kids are killed every year playing baseball. Which is far more than kids dying from an amoeba caught swimming in a lake. Shoot, far more people are going to DROWN in the lake than get the amoeba.

Should kids stop play baseball? Nope. Nor should they stop swimming in lakes.

Dan

I swam in a lake just this week, at Scout camp. First time i ever saw a government inspecter show up and take sample of the water. I don't believe there were any cattle or livestock anywhere near this area. Most likely just some deer. Back to the child dying, yes ,it is a tragedy to lose one..

The lake Raleigh, NC gets its drinking water, has some of the swimming areas closed off and on through the summer. They have already closed at least once this year.

Supposedly the contamination is from the Sea Gulls. Since the Gulls are not on the Sea should they not be Lake Gulls? :p:laughing: I do not think the cities up stream from the lake dump into the watershed.

Some of the swimming areas are on parts of the lakes that do not flush out much which does not help.

wow from a baseball!

some folks just do not know any better, i see many folks "newbies" or 1st time owner or like and never done much with a tractor ever before. they don't know the limitations, and most likely may not have had a chance young to pickup on different do's and don'ts on tractors. and know about safety. there is no "driving school class" folks can take like getting a driving licenses. a tractor is a completely different beast than a car or truck. and tractors allow you to get into some very ugly situations quick vs a car or truck would never allow you really to get yourself into or experience.

can't remember person nickname now, now that i have to think about it. about 3 type of folks and learning. having them constant reminders from folks. vs a quick read in a manual and most likely forgetting most of it. can help get certain things to sink in and be remembered. kinda like homework. you ya have to do say a bunch of math using same type of formula but in this case, it more of different things with tractors and formulas that can result in injury or death or like. it is a responsible community, that has a good amount of folks that care what happens.

getting killed by a baseball. though wow. football. but baseball. that is a knew one to me. gong to have to remember for when a kid doesn't want to use the batters helmet.
