There is another website that I read about things happening in FLA. The owner of the website went off on a rant about swimming in FLA lakes because there is an amoeba in SOME FLA lakes. If you catch the amoeba or maybe it is more accurate to say, if the amoeba catches you, you MIGHT die.
I got in a "discussion" about his fear mongering.

Should people know about the amoeba? Absolutely. Should they run from the water like people did in the 70's fearing a shark attack? No!.
I bring this up for a couple of reasons. One, the amoeba that was mentioned, exists in warm lakes and ponds all over the south. So if you go swimming ,and a day or two later, get flu like symptoms, go to the doc and mention the fresh water amoeba to get treatment. I think antibiotics takes care of the problem. A teenager south of us in NC picked up some flesh eating bug that danged near killed him so it is not just the amoeba.
I grew up swimming almost every day in a lake in FLA as a kid, as did so many people back then, so I really resented the fear mongering.
As part of the "discussion" I looked up how many kids die playing sports every year. The number that sticks in my head was that about 35 kids are killed every year playing baseball. Which is far more than kids dying from an amoeba caught swimming in a lake. Shoot, far more people are going to DROWN in the lake than get the amoeba.
Should kids stop play baseball? Nope. Nor should they stop swimming in lakes.

Dan
