Hi all,

I normally "darken" the Kubota forum, but I thought this query might have broader appeal. :)

Due to back surgery, my MD says I'm not allowed to lift a full, 5-6 gallon fuel can, but a helpful, fellow TBN'er suggested these fuel transfer pumps:

Tuthill痴 Fill-Rite DC Fuel Transfer Pumps柚ain Page
12 VDC

(For anyone that's interested, that thread is here: Re: No Spill Diesel Can that works? http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/kubota-owning-operating/357258-no-spill-diesel-can-works-5.html?highlight=best+fuel+can)

However, most of these are overkill for what I need, in terms of GPM (and I haven't yet got pricing info on them). But one does look like it would (more than) meet my needs:

12 VDC: Portable 12V DC 1/5 HP Rotary Vane 3/4 in NPT Inlet 3/4 in Plastic Nozzle
Portable 12V DC 1/5 HP Rotary Vane 3/4 in NPT Inlet 3/4 in Plastic Nozzle

However, I noticed that the above pump says it's for "Diesel and Antifreeze"--it does NOT mention GASOLINE.

And if I'm going to spend the money, I wanted one that could do both.

My Question:
Can anyone recommend a good, 12VDC-powered fuel transfer pump, with both suction hose and fill hose/nozzle, that IS safe for both diesel and GASOLINE?

Thanks much,

My Hoe

I've gotten 2 pumps from TSC. One for gas and one for diesel. They are the same pump. 8gpm and manual nozzle. Complete kit runs less than 200.00 each. I use 55 gallon drums. Works great. When I need to fill up I load in the back of the truck and go to the gas station. When I return I use my bucket to unload. At some point I'll put the barrels on pallets so I can load and unload without getting off the tractor.

Fill-Rite makes good transfer pumps, but they are expensive, like the RD1212 and RD812 series shown here: Fill-Rite ($220-250)

Less expensive is this battery powered one (battery pump) but it needs to be as high as the tank, so may not be suitable for you. ($70)

This one rates higher than the Fill-Rite: extremepowerus ($210)

I bought a Fill Rite several years ago at TSC and it works great. At that time it was in the 150 to 200 dollar range. This screws into a barrel or fuel tank whatever you have

Before I got my RA under control, I searched for a 12v pump I could use for both gas and diesel that I wouldn't have to get a second mortgage to buy. All that were rated for gas seem to carry a premium for some reason. I just don't see why though. I mean you can get an in-tank fuel injection pump for less than $30. At that price, you get about one gallon per minute but there are larger ones. I just don't think 8 or 10 gallons a minute would work for me when filling lawn tractors. And in most cases, I top up the tractor tanks with about 5 gallons or so. I rarely run them to near empty. Gotta work a lunch break in there somewhere. :)

In any case, I stopped looking and went back to an old hand pump I had. I replaced the old rubber plunger seal with a leather seal and now use that. It pumps maybe 6-8ozs per stroke so it really doesn't take that long to fill a lawnmower, lawn tractor or tractor. It screws right on to the 5-gallon gas/diesel cans. And it sure beats lifting AND holding a 5 gallon can.

The biggest problem I've found with manual pumps and this is true even for my setup is if you can't see into the tank while filling is the tendency to overfill the tank and spill fuel. On my gas setup I've changed the nozzle to an automatic on. The pump on the diesel side says that it is not compatible with automatic nozzles.

I pump only diesel. Only gas I use is for weedeaters and chainsaws.

I use a fillrite, but it's acted up a couple of times. I use 55gal barrels, to fetch the diesel, then transfer to a 55gal barrel with the pump on it. I recently bought some forks for the fel, and if it goes out, I'll simply hoist the diesel tank up, on a rank, and let gravity take over. Cheap and effective.

I have the Fill Rite RD812NP that is rated for both gas and diesel. Got it off of Zoro.com. I signed up for their email and regularly get 20% off coupons and I got lucky they had it on sale too. Total price with free shipping was less than $150 - way less than my local TSC wanted even with one of their sale coupons.

Search around. Zoro does change their prices daily too so check back often. Amazon was a close second on having the best price.
Hope this helps
