12 volt group size as 6v group 1

I have to replace the battery in my 64 2000 gasser so I’m going to convert it from 6-12.
I’m having a bit of a hard time finding a 12 volt replacement that is the same size and at least 550 cca but I wanted 650 or more for the cold winters here in Vermont.
Anybody know some group sizes that will fit?

I am also working on finding someone locally to convert the generator to 12 volt rather than hang an alternator on the side if I can.

It appears an H5 may be very similar and has the terminals inset below the top some. I’ll let you guys know if it appears to work. Got home late and just put it on a charger to top off before installation.

When I sold NH parts up in NY we stocked and sold NH part # F545DSW for 4 cylinder prior and N series 12 volt converted tractors. BCI group 22F and 500 CCA. Never had any complaints. There may be something with more CCA in that size but that worked for my customers. You can always use a generator and VR speced for a 4 cylinder prior diesel.

If an eight volt battery will fit it will give you a bit more starting current. Your generator should keep it adequately charged. I'd be leery of throwing twelve volts to a six volt starter. If you get the dimensions of your battery it should be a simple matter to determine what group size fits and meets your parameters.

A 6 volt VR will not keep an 8 volt battery adequately charged without adjustment.
There are thousands of 6 volt starters out there getting a steady diet of 12 volts.
Being leery of that type of conversion is your choice, but it isn’t justified by most folks results.

So the H5 group size battery did work. However, the original battery hold down won’t work correctly with the inset terminals. I bungee corded the battery in for now and will make a hold down when I’m in the welding mode again.

Ordered an alternator conversion kit from Yesterday’s Tractors. I’ll install it and then send the original generator and regulator off to be converted during winter.
