I finally decided to read the owners manual /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
, getting ready to do a oil change, All previous oil changes were done by my dealer. the manual says 10W-30, looked at my last bill from my dealer- he used 15W-40, Should I be worried(15W-40) ? Should I be upset with my dealer? Should I use 10W-30 like the book says or should I continue using 15W-40 ? that my dealer has been using in my tractor.

I would use the 10W-30 that the owners manual recommends be used. The 15W-40 is a heavier oil and would be stiffer to pump cold than the 10W-30, especially in the colder mornings you get with NY winters.

The 15W-40 won't do any harm to an engine, but with a newer tractor it shouldn't need that heavy of an oil. 15W-40 is fine for an engine that was older and looser, but fairly new engines with tighter tolerances need lighter weight oils.

ron,i would contact mahindra to see if that is a misprint,i have been a diesel mechanic for 25 years and have never seen anything but 15w40 used, but, they may have a reason to use 10w30 so i would check with them(not the dealer).if they say to use 10w30 by all means use it and tell your dealer to use it also.

At least you know what they used at the dealer. My dealer had a large stack of 10W30 New Holland oil on their floor so I can only hope that's what they used.
I been looking at what's commonly available and the 15W40 for diesel engines is the only thing I see in the auto parts stores and Walmart. The New Holland 10W30 at the tractor place is the only place I've seen 10W30 at all but unless their extremely proud of it, I'll probably go with it. Danny

Mahindra has said 15w 40 is ok to use and is what we use for all of our services also. If you can find a 10w30 fleet rated diesel oil that is also ok but harder to come by.

dieseldoc I have been using Mobil 1 10w-30w in my 2810 for about 30 hours. I put it in after my 1st oil change.
I called Mahindra USA and spoke to their tech group in detail about using syn. oil. They said that if I was willing to pay the price by all means use it.
I also asked my dealer and got the same response.

Gary,

You might want to double check your owners manual on oil Service Category rating required for the oil... Some of the newer models of various manufacturers are requiring oil that meets the CI or CI-4 service category. Mobil 1 - 10W30 synthetic and for that matter 5W30 are primarily gasoline engine oils. They are only rated to the CF rating level which is 11 years old. If you go to Mobil 1 website you will see the 5W30 & 10W30 are only rated to CF under the description and product information. They do mention diesel, but generally only multi-valve in SUV's and trucks. Now if you look at their Mobil 1 5W40 SUV -TRUCK oil, it is rated to CI-4 and in the product detail shows it has a TBN number of 12, which is very good. It is a heavy duty type oil for diesel engines. While the site does not show the TBN number for Mobil gasoline engines oils, they are generally much lower in the 6-8 range since gasoline engines do not produce the higher amounts of soot or burned fuel in the oil.

If your Mahindra manual says the oil only needs to be rated to only CD or CF, then no problems, but this being said I always like using heavy duty diesel rated motor oils that have a robust soot control additive package such as Shell Rotella, Delvac, Delo and a host of others....

As an alternative to Mobil you could also use Rotella 5W40 Synthetic, or Rotella SB 10W30 which is a synthetic blend if you want to stay with the synthetics... Ofcourse, you have many other options such as Amsoil, Royal Purple with superior performance measurements but at higher costs....

Ron - Oil preference is one of those topics that runs parallel to religion and politics. I assume that your NY winters are similar to the Wisc winters and you are already running a block heater a few hours before turning the key to start it. From my first oil change, I poured in Rotella 15w40 and change the oil and filter every 50 hours. I figure if Ford can recommend 15w40 in their diesel engine trucks, their tolerances must be as tight as Mahindra's. I don't believe in switching oil grades between summer and winter so I run only one all year long. Let's say a person changes his oil in March. Chances are good that he'll still be running the 10w30 into mid summer before he pulls the plug again. Ask 50 guys and you'll get 50 different variations on oil changes Ron. Key is to change it often as far as I'm concerned. I have a sawmill with a 25 horse Kohler engine on it. It has 1 1/2 quart capacity in the crankcase. I change the oil at the end of everyday and the filter after 40 hours. Right now my hour meter is reading 2,672 hours on it. The original engine runs great and burns no oil. I think I'm doing something right.

Surge, I checked in my manual and it says CD or CF for the oil classification. However I think that I will take your advice and look into the Shell Rotella syn.
Thanks for replying to this post, for I really thought that I was using the best of the best.

Well since all has been said here, This is what I would do.
The engine in you Mahindra 3510 is manufactured by Daedong which is a Kioti engine and since the engine manfacture recommends that you run....API Service CC or CD SEA 15W-40
I would and we do put 15-40 in all of our tractors that we service. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
