Hello, I Just got a 1085 and am getting ready to disc a 70 acre field. I need some instructions on using the Multi-Power (MP). Lets say the tractor is in Low range and 1st gear. As I'm traveling forward do I just move the MP selector into high or low on the fly? Do I need to stop to shift? Do I need to use the clutch? Should I back of the RPMs before moving the MP selector? Can I not use the MP and leave the MP selector between high and low? Any help is appreciated! Dave

Hey dave the slave ! Welcome to TBN, You can Google it how does the multi-power work on a M-F 1085? Or go to Vintage Tractor Engineer & it explains how it works & how to use it & those are nice tractors by the way! & is yours a open station or a cab? I hope You find the info your looking for at this site, Have fun & be safe doing it (y).

Thanks for the reply! My 1085 has the cab.
I actually spent a lot of time googling operating instructions for the multi power and found lots about it but no step by step on using it. Today i used the tractor and just slide it into high or low while traveling and also while idling. It worked great either way.

Hey that's good to hear! Did You find that site helpful at all vintage tractor engineer  ? they seem to have allot of info on older M-F's & I was thinking about subscribing to them for my 1959 M-F 50 even though I have operators manual , Sometimes it helps to have someone who spends allot time working on these Mighty-Fine=M-F. The one thing You need to keep a eye on is the turbo inlet oil line those are prone to failure overtime, Other than that they are pretty stout tractors(y),& thanks for your reply.

Better late than never,
Shifting from High to Lowmultipower or from Low to High multipower is done on the mov

SAFTY TIP DOWNHILL = HIGH Multipower at ALL times (Low multipower = free wheel or "gearbox full of neutral" when going downhill.) If you forget to shift up, and start to free wheel, DON'T hit the brakes, UPSHIFT the multipower, and THEN brake as required. If you are caught badley, then drop the attatchment for extra drag and keep you straight.

Next newby trap: In forward gear facing uphill in high multipower, stopped and you go to change out of gear but the stick is JAMMED!!!. No it is not jammed that is a "hill hold" feature so you don't roll back as you let the clutch out. Shift into Low multipower to "unlock gearstick". NOTE, Make sure the brakes are on or you will roll back.
2nd Note: you get the same effect in reverse facing downhill as well.
DON'T use it to stop, it is not designed for that sort of abuse.

Longevity tip: got from MF mechanic, pull diff oil dipstick and file a new "high" mark 1/2" above the factory mark, especially if you have a loader fitted and/or operate in hill country. Multipowers love plenty of oil.

Generally run in high mulipower.
When operating under heavy load expect a solid clunk when you downshift.
Have fun.
