Hey Guys, I have a low pressure hydraulics question for a 1085 with cab. If I put a gauge on the pto port at idle and turn the pto on and off, pressure is 250 psi one way and 0 the other. If I move the gauge to the powershift port (right hand side of the firewall) at idle I get 225 psi in low and 125 psi in high. If I rev it up I get 250 in low and 225 in high. (this is with fairly cold oil) The powershift has only been working in low, or sometimes very weakly in high.

1) Is the powershift pressure supposed to drop to near 0 when the shifter is in high?

2) Any ideas on what is wrong?

3) Is there a troubleshooting flowchart, hydraulic diagram, youtube, manual, or website that anyone knows of. I have an owners manual, parts manual, and a I&T shop manual but it gives disassembly procedures but not diagnostics. I have posted this on a couple of other forums and posters have suggested seals in the multipower clutches or a valve sticking, but I would really like a more positive diagnostic procedure rather than replacing a bunch of unnecessary parts.

Thanks
Alf

Just to clarify, on a hill does the tractor run away with the multipower in high?
How many hours has tractor done?

5600 hours. The hi multipower is very weak, sometimes it will hold back, usually it doesn't (I have gotten so used to riding the brakes on hills I had to think about it :D )

I asked this question in the hopes that several people would respond with a answer highlighting a common weakness. Since they haven't, I am guessing this isn't a really common problem, or it is expensive to hire someone to fix it so they live with it. I did learn that there are at least 2 shop manuals for this tractor, the 54 page I&T manual and a 292 page reproduction of the original dealer manual. I think maybe my next step is to buy the better manual.

Thanks for your response redman

Hello Alf, This sounds similar to the problem I had with my 135 multipower.
Simple first. Follow the multipower linkage through to where it goes into the gearbox. There is an adjustable double nut at the last joint, if you are fortunate it is a simple adjustment problem.
If this does not work it will get expensive. You will need to split the tractor.
There are 2 possible things wrong in my experiance.
1) you have a worn out multipower and need to replace it.
2) you have a worn out "nose cone" .
In my case the nose cone was completely worn out and was remanufactured. BUT it mimiced perfectly a worn out multipower. So the multipower was pulled out, found to be good and put back in.
I asked around before splitting the tractor, and was told multipower worn out. Noone said nose cone, and these were MF mechanics.
I had the local MF dealer do the job as it was beyond me.
good luck
