Hi Folks,

I recently purchased a blade and am wondering whether
effective grading is best accomplished using draft control.
My 1050 has a touch lever at the 3-pt hitch to control
draft, and a position lever to the right of the seat to control height.
I have a some questions regarding the use of draft
control:

1) Should the touch lever be pointing rearward to enable
the use of the position control?

2) Does the amount of draft decrease as the touchlever is
moved from horizontal to vertical?

3) To fully lift the implement for transport, the touch lever
should be positioned pointing straight upward?

4) Also, when the touch lever is positioned for draft, then is it
the case that position lever changes have no effect?

5) Is there float control at the 3-pt in the same way that
there is at the FEL, or does draft control effectively accomplish
this function?

Thanks for your help,
David

The draft control lever should be pointed to the rear (horizontial) for position control. It will hold position regardless of load.

For full draft control, the lever should be pointed at the tractor seat more or less vertical. My manual says to set the draft control to either draft or position, do not set it in between.

To raise the hitch, the position lever is more less vertical.

The position control can still lift or lower the implement, but the hitch will react to load on it's own as well.

The 3point does not have a float as such, but it doesn't have down pressure either. The angle of attack on the top link determines bite on somthing like a blade for example. Shorter is more cutting, longer is more spreading.

One last thing, The top link brackets have two mounting points on the tractor. The lower hole is more sensitive to draft control. The upper hole is less sensitive. HTH

Thanks Scott,

I appreciate the education. The idea that draft control
is either full on or full off - touch lever horizontal or
vertical and never inbetween - is this common for all
JD's, or is your manual specifically for the 1050?
When draft control is on, and if I use the position
control to choose a level for the hitch, I assume that
draft control will then work at the prescribed position.
I believe this is what you are saying when you said,
"The position control can still lift or lower the implement,
but the hitch will react to load on it's own as well".

Thanks for the clarification,
Dave

Drop your depth lever to the maximum down. Then set your depth with the draft lever, then you are using your draft to do your cutting and load. When you need to raise, do use your lift lever for that job as well as setting it back down. You will find it easier to adjust the depth of cut with the draft over your raise lower lever. On the tiller it might not make as much difference as on the box blade. Tractors for farm run from about a 3-4% load change to over 20% to react on the draft. Naturally those at 20% do little or no good.
His is some draft information that I think Art posted a while back.

My manual is for the 1050. The hitch will work at nearly any level. I usually lower mine all the way for blading and adjust the toplink for blading. I use the skids on the tiller for depth control there.

I love my 1050, tough as nails!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
