Since my engine runs below temperature (and at the end of last winter never warmed at all) I am going to replace the thermostat. The drain plug on the radiator isn't exactly conveniently located. Same with the engine block drain plug. Anyone have any pointers on the best way to drain the coolant without having it run all over everything?

How old is your 1026? If you had it for at least 2 year it would be a good time to replace the coolant as recommended in the service manual.

If you cover most of your radiator with cardboard, it will maintain a much more even and warmer temp in the cold weather.
Even with a hotter thermostat, you will get large fluctuations if the whole radiator is exposed.

The idi engines run a 160° for pre-chamber protection but the radiator fans move enough air that they will supercool the block. Normal winter temps will be between 130° and 145° unless you block the radiator like arlen said.
