10\' mower for a ford 5000 3pt vs drag

I've been browsing the internet in search of a suitable ( and affordable )mower. in the 10' range.

I see that there is a model made by kodiak.. that comes in two flavors.

3pt 10'

and drag style 10'

The drag style is almost another half again the price of the 3pt unit.

The weight listed on the 3pt one is 1518 pounds.. and I believe it has dual tail wheels.

Question is this.. for the learned people out there with the bigger tractors.

Will a ford 5000 handle the 10' 3pt lift mower?

I really don't intend to actually 'lift' the mower for transport.. it can just run down the road resting on its two back wheels.. with the front lifted up.. say with the toplink adjusted long.. or even a chain toplink.. or pipe/chain toplink.

Wouldn't be any less safe to run it without a toplink than to run a drag mower?? right?

Anyone know the 3pt lift specs on a 5000 The mower can be setup as cat1/2.. so I'm HOPEING the 5000 will tote this bugger... as it is the only thing I've found in my price range for 10' Everything else is 8'...

Comments.. and opinions needed. I may have to make a decision on the tractor as early as the next couple of days.. and the 5000 i'm looking at is sweet looking..... says 'buy me and mow with me' all over it..

Like I say.. if the 5000 and the mower will work.. I'll be ok on finances.. If I have to go to a large tractor.. the next closest in price is a ford 7810.. and oc course then.. if I get that the wife wants me to get a 12' or 15' mower.. ..which she has ok'ed.. mind you.. but the price difference between the 5000/10' and the 7810 /12'-15' is about 6000-7000 more $... and I really just can't see taking on a 3rd job right now!.. and the lottery ain't looking good either.

The 5000 will handle a 10' mower fine. I would get a pull behind cutter only because a 10' 3pt cutter will lighten the front of the 5000 considerably as there will be times you won't be able to keep the rear wheels down. The 5000 will be able to lift it without problem either way.

What type of setup is the 7810? I have been looking for one (that or a TW 5). My only requirement is that it has a cab with heat and ac. How much do they want for the 7810 compared to the 5000 as I have also been looking for a 5000 for my in-laws farm so what ever tractor you don't take I would be interested in the other.

The 7810 was 2wd.. and no cab.. just rops and canopy. The 5000 of course has no rops or anything!

OOps.. I hit continue too fast.. I still had questions for you.

Sounds like you've had experience with a 5000 before.

So in your opinion.. the 5000 is beefy enough for the 10'.. and even if I did go the 3pt route.. the lift shoul lift it..

Question now.. if I do the 3pt route.. could I leave the toplink disconected and run it like a drag mower ( except that it will swing with the tractor on a turn, rather than follow it ).. that sounds like it would keep the back of the mower on the ground at all times.

Just thinking out loud here.

thanks

Re: 10\' mower for a ford 5000 3pt vs drag

is that a geared 5000 or the cruisomatic auto 10speed? We had the latter, and it became to problematic to keep running. the parts to re-do the selectomatic correctly, was out of the question because all that is availalbe is more used parts from other machines.. the tractor owend me nothing.. A 68 model with a gazillion hours on it.. I would never again have a selectomatic trans. The machine caught fire twice, both times I had to re-so part of the electrical harness.. Like I said, pretty decent machine other than that selectomatic trans.

lifting just off the lift arms is no different then the semi mount plows. They lift off the lift arms and have a ram raise the tail wheel to give the back shares ground clearance. In your case you should be fine as long as you can lift high enough to get over any obstacles without the pto getting bent off the front of the chopper.

The 5000 has plenty of power and lifting ability to handle the 10' cutter. My neighbor runs a 10' woods pull behind with a 4610 and I know the 5000 can lift a lot more then what that cutter weighs. I would not hesitate at all about being able to run the cutter with the 5000. Only hesitation would be the 5000's shape which you have enough experience with older tractors to know what to look for. There are a lot of 5000's running up here still. Mostly a chore tractor now on the small farms but still see a lot of use on wagons and spreaders.

Soundguy, you have a Ford 5000? If you are having trouble in finding its spare parts, contact me. There are a lot of this model here. One of my friend is about to finish his own (home-built) hydraulic toplink with my help for his own 5000. It will also tilt the side leveling boxes with extra two hoses. You will like it if you too add such a lift to your 5000.
