GM states this truck(gas) will tow 13000 lbs. has any owner put this to the test?? I presently tow a 10k toy hauler with a 02 Ford 7.3 diesel. My warranty has just expired and was thinking of replacing my diesel with this gas. Am I wrong????? Thanks

Wow! That's a very nice upgrade from my 2006 2500HD (6.0L gas) which is only rated by GM to tow 10,000 lbs... and struggles at times to do that!

Time for me to trade up too???

Your tow rating will differ depending on various items such as:
Regular cab, Ext. Cab, or Crew cab
2WD or 4WD
Standard box or long box
Axle ratio
Engine

Most are rated for max trailer weight of 13,000 with weight dist. hitch. According to my 07 owners manual, The actual maximum trailer weight will vary depending on the above items. Check an owners manual at the dealer for those options and ratings before you buy. Also depending on how much towing you do should be considered before choosing gas over diesel. Mileage will be much lower on the gas truck especially towing. I just traded in my 05 EC 4x4 SB w/ diesel which was getting 19.5-20 MPG empty and 14.5 towing 7K. New one isn't broken in yet but first 300 miles empty averaged 17.5 empty. I hope it at least matches my 05 once broke in.

I just looked at GM Fleet and Commercial - Large Fleet Vehicles, Cars, Trucks, SUVs and according to the online order guide (found here GM Online Order / Reference Guide) the max towing capacity for the 6.0L is 12,900 (either Ball Hitch or 5th/gooseneck) which is a reg cag 2wd 4.10 axle ratio. To get 13,000 (Ball Hitch towing, 5th/Gooseneck higher) you have to get the Duramax.

I have not talked to anybody using the 6.0L to tow this much weight, but looking at the max configuration if I was towing this much weight I would get the Duramax. Even if I was towing 12,000 on a regular basis I would still opt for the Duramax.

You will be happier with diesel, especially if you're used to it. We pull a 3-horse slant with a 2006 Ram/Cummins 3/4ton and it works great. My BIL has a 1 ton Chevy 454 dually and pulls a similar sized car hauler with it. It works, but he gets 6-8mpg hauling and maybe 10-11mpg empty. That's pretty bad. We get 16 around town empty, 18-19 highway empty, and 13-15 highway towing the trailer (which is 28' including GN and sticks 2' above the pickup cab).

Anything wrong with your Ford? Everything I read is that the 7.3L was far better than the 6.0 powersmoke and many people seem to miss it. I hear many reports of over 20mpg on 1-tons with the 7.3L, which I don't think you'll get with any 2007 diesel 1 ton (any brand). If you do want new, the 2007 Chevy Duramax seems great.

I bought an '07 Chevy 2500 Classic with the Duramax/Allson and love it. I get 16-18 highway city mix but does drop down to 10 when pulling the 4 horse GN fully loaded with horses and tack. Didn't even consider the gasser for what I was going pull with it. I believe the gas engine that has that tow rating is the 8.whatever liter 502 big block they make now.

I have a 2007 LBZ Duramax. This is my third one. It does well, all considered.

My friend has the 8.3L gasser. It will stay right with my diesel burner, loaded or unloaded. Other than the large gasser, you'll not get a fair comparison to a diesel in the GM line.

I think the 13K is rated for the 4500 or the 5500 series.

As for a 4.10:1 gear? It's perfect if you climb hills and trees on the farm. Otherwise, get a 3.73:1 if you want any reasonable road driving characteristics, such as fuel mileage and a top end at a low RPM.

Do a search for "Diesel Page Forum." You'll find all you need there for info.

Bragging rights start when GM puts a 500 HP Cat in a light duty truck. Call me when they come in. :D

Thanks for your replies. Before I purchased my 02 350 diesel , I had a 01 Ford 3/4 5.4 (gas) and was told it would tow 10k. It was even in my manual. At that time I was towing about 6K and it would not even handle that amount. I challanged Ford but did not get very far. (had to try). Now I'm cautious about what any manufacturer states. That's why I'm asking the people that drive them. From what most of you are implying, diesels are still the choice.

I upgraded to 07 Duramax Diesel/ Allisan transmission,Crew Cab and it is awesom!!! I pull a 3h w/living quarters, with 2 horses hay, water etc... I now can go out of state!! With my gas I wouldn't go more then 2 hours away from home; just couldn't handle it safely. Actually after 3 camping trips my next trip was to the Chevy dealership. While one can struggle going up hill towing (gas) it mostly is about the stop of the load you are hauling.

Best Regards

Wow, that's sad. I've been really impressed with our 3/4 ton Ram/Cummins (2006 model). We had a long road trip to NC last year, pulling our 3 horse slant (5000lbs empty). With one large horse (1200lbs) and some hay and water in the trailer, luggage, etc. for maybe 6500lbs trailer load, we drove through the mountains of NC/Virginia/W.Va. with the cruise control set at 65mph and absolutely no problems. The engine barely even strained going uphill on cruise. Brakes were just fine too. We've had three horses in the trailer, though not in mountains, and it has no issues with that load either (and it shouldn't since rated towing capacity is 13,000lbs).

We didn't have experience towing stuff this big before getting our setup last year, and we tried to make sure we had some comfort room above the bare minimum. We definitely succeeded.
