I had a similar problem with my 5403. It ended up being the PTO safety switch. It wasn’t fully opening even though the PTO lever was disengaged. The dead giveaway was that the PTO light was illuminated on the instrument panel when I switched the key on. Hope you can track down the culprit!

I think that the heat from welding on the pump shaft will destroy the pump shaft seal. If you go with a u-joint then I would look for a clamp style hub.
