    Thanks to all for the post. Opened the case (see photos) and found a broken rod just above where it joins the crankshaft. No holes in the case and gears all look good. There is a 1/2" semi circle broken off the bottom of the cylinder sleeve (see pictures) which appears to be below the lowest...

    I have a JD LX255 which has a Kohler CV15S; 15HP single cylinder engine; turns over but no compression and a clunking noise so suspect thrown rod or piston. Reading online it appears not an easy repair so wondering if purchasing a replacement engine might be a better option in terms of time...
