    govenor replacement

A year after my engine re-build on this '63 Ford 4000, it started surging the engine, and after many tries at finding the reason, the local tractor shop told me my governor was messed up. They pulled it down and found the weights are worn with flat spots, and so we've been trying to replace the...

    1963 4000 governor?split tractor or no?

It has been advised to me by the local shop that my surging problem is due to governor issues. The question is, does this tractor have to be split front from rear to repair the governor or not? Big price difference to fix if so. It is. 4 cylinder gas, 172 engine, wide front end. Thanks.

    Surging Ford 4000

My 63 Ford 4000 172 ci 4 cyl gas engine recently rebuilt starts easily but surges all the time now. Been using it fine for months after the rebuild. Recently I was mowing and the engine quit. I decided that the carb had issues so I had it rebuilt. Put it back on with a new gasket and with the...

    Governor linkage part needed

Ford 4000 Governor linkage part needed I havent been on here in a long time. My governor linkage on my 63 Ford 4000 gas 4 cylinder needed adjustment. The threaded rod was frozen to the clevis on the end. Penetrating oil and a torch did no good loosening it for over a week, so I ended up...

    '63 ford 4000 lift issue

My lift on the 63 ford 4000 is acting poorly. If I describe it, surely someone will recognize the symptoms? If I pull the handle up a little, nothing lifts, more, more, more, then when I get the handle almost all the way up, it finally starts to move, but then it goes way too high, and if I back...

    tractor with no thermostat?!

Hey, I need to ask you all a question. I set out today to put my new tstat in my '63 Ford 4000 4 cylinder, 172 cid. Been running hot EVERY time I used it since I got it last fall. Been watching the guage and quit when it gets to red. Have not used it much yet, because of that, obviously. Others...

proper temp reading on red/green gauge?

On my '63 Ford 4000, with a new temp gauge, I have been making some changes to stop an overheating situation. When I get all the possible problems fixed, and it is all "good" to where, on cold start up, the needle goes from cold, through the green range, and holds steady at the top end of the...

    oil drain plug numbers ?

Changed my oil for the first time today in the 1963 Ford 4000. It is a 172 four cylinder, gas. Removed the drain plug, and found there is a screen wire cylinder snapped onto the plug, I guess to trap trash solids from being recirculated. Inside the plug cup surface, there are the following...

    Ford 4000 kicking out PTO

Has anyone had any experience with a Ford 4000 1963 kicking out of the PTO when mowing or other uses? Mine has kicked out of gear several times, when under a load. Mostly it does it if I am bush hogging some significant saplings, or the blade slices through a hump of dirt. Is it supposed to do...

oil pressure drop after warm up

I have a '63 Ford 4000, new to me, 172 cid, gas, 5 speed. I have run it twice since I recently got it. When I was looking at buying it, I had the seller show me the compression, dry and wet, on each cylinder, all in the 125-135 psi range, and the oil pressure was just above 40 psi. I've bought...

County says no camping on your own land !!

Two years ago, the county inspector trespassed on my 86 acre home farm, past the posted signs, while I was away at work, to leave me a notice that I was in violation of the county zoning ordinance, for allowing a friend to spend the night in a camper on my property. There was never any phone...

    spring loaded throttle?

My "new" early-style Ford 4000 seems to have a spring loaded throttle lever, which keeps pulling back to idle, if I do not constantly hold it to the desired RPMs. I'm told that it is supposed to do that, but I find it aggravating and unreasonable to have to drive with only my left hand, while...

    Ford ??

I'm new here. Why isn't there a Ford thread under normal size tractor brands, except for "lawn and garden?" I'm confused. I know there is Ford under vintage . . . . . any understanding?

Hello from Ham Country USA (soon to be China :-( (Smithfield, Va.)

Hey y'all. I have owned and used since 1993 a 1948 Massey Harris 30 row crop tractor, to mow my idle fields and hunting lanes on our farm. I just purchased a refurbed 1963 F-4000 4 cyl gas 5 speed tractor from a local rehabber. Should receive it next week some time. I'm upgrading my horsepower...
