Kubota wants an arm and a leg for their hydro fluid! Is there a comparable fluid I can use?

Comparable? Nope. The machine costs tens of thousands; it’s worth playing it safe and using Kubota SUDT fluid for a couple hundred bucks.

With no API standards, and only relying on a manufacturer's statement of compatibility, I would stick with OEM fluids for the transmission / hydraulics.

i noticed my 5Gal pail of kubota sudt2 mentions that it meets J20d spec which is the john deere low vis Hygard spec but I still haven't had the guts to try the kubota fluid in my john deere or the hygard in my kubota.

if you are close to canada, I think it is quite a bit cheaper here. but its been a while since I looked up prices

HST version takes 12 gallons ... Every 400 hours (no years since last change, just engine hours used) ... About $150 for a 5 gallon bucket of the SUDT2 ... Front axle will use the another 2.5 gallons. (If you have 4X4)

I bought the SUDT2!

ETA - the manual calls for either UDT or the SUDT2 which is a synthetic blend ... If you wanted to save a few bucks, and can find it, the older original version (UDT) should be cheaper ...

Yes, you don’t have to stick with Kubota-branded fluid. Many owners use Universal Tractor Fluid (UTF) that meets Kubota UDT or Super UDT specifications. Just make sure the alternative fluid clearly lists those specs on the label—otherwise, it’s safer to stick with OEM.

Sure ... But when his transmission gives up the ghost, will it be blamed on "old age" or cheap fluid?

Probably could just fill it with water ... Should last for "a bit"!

I have the same tractor, other than I'm not sure if his has a cab like mine ... I'd not take a chance on non-oem ... While my own 20 year old tractor is long past any chance of warranty ... I bought it to use, not rebuild it because of premature wear ... These are quality built machines that require particular maintenance to ensure longevity.

4000 hours is a fair amount of hours for the average owner here on TBN. My 10 year old L4060 only has around 1200 hours, but the plan is for this to last many more years.
