12 States to ban diesel vehicles

Been away from the big trucks since 08' but in my past experience, the Jacob's were the most effective and the loudest. My first was in a new 74' Diamond Reo tri-axle. 270 constant torque cummins that would put the truck sideways empty and on a wet road. (Only did that once) Next was a Mack Maxydine. Not overly loud, okay retarding ability. Then several CAT C15's. About the same as the old Mack. Then I was given around an 05' Volvo to drive. Ryder rental, 350 Cummins I think it was, stock single stack exhaust. The Jacobs would wake the dead and hold back the truck. Hmm, I also drove some Mercedes powered tractors with an engine brake. Quiet, so so retarding power. And some DD's with if I recall correctly, a three stage brake setup. Again, so so retarding.

I had an exhaust brake on my 97' 12 valve. Nice for taking the "edge" off going down a hill but not enough to spin me out on a slippery road.

Cummins B6.7 octane/7.2 diesel. The two appear to have similarities, both about 300 lbs more than the current 6.7 Cummins, both have engine brakes

I think the gas Cummins would be a first for gas engine brake. I don't think there is a gas exhaust brake even.

You're doubting correctly.

Rams have exhaust brakes, and quite effective ones, but that's entirely different from a Jake brake.
Figured as much.
My exhaust brake and tow haul mode pretty much make get rid of the need for service brakes.

I thought liability (ie mall crawlers with two bags of groceries in the bed using a true jake brake and locking up the rear wheels and wrecking) was the reason Dodge/DCX/FCA/Stellantis/RAM/ whatever they are called now wouldn't put them on the pickups, not noise.

Hey nisaacs, were you active on TDR a few year back?

A friend of mine delivers trailers, mostly goosenecks, for a living. He has gone from Ram 3500s to 4500s and now 5500s because of the weight of his loads.

Usually he trades in between high 300,000 to a bit before 500,000 miles, and he has never had to do anything to the brakes. Yes, that Cummins exhaust brake is very effective. I rarely use the service brakes except at stop signs and stoplights, and that's while always towing something.

We have to use the regular brakes on the 5500, even with the exhaust brake.

But the truck weights in at 19,500.

I could see not having to use them if it was in a flat bed.

In my case the 3500 is a mere 9,500 lbs. or so, but at a minimum there's about 5,000 behind it, and I have been at (possibly a tad over) the 39,000 lb. CGVWR.

Also maybe worth pointing out is that I tend to drive fast, and that there are some decent grades here in the Rockies.

Heck, one time after having picked up a used 40' gooseneck flatbed I drove the quite curvy road 150 some miles home, and fast as usual. Not sure where along the way the trailer brakes quit working, but it wasn't until at the stop sign 10 miles from home that I found out that there were no trailer brakes.

Up until that point I hadn't used anything but the excellent exhaust brake, so there was no reason to find out that they didn't work. I'm just glad it wasn't when having to abort passing a slower vehicle because of approaching traffic. That could've been ugly.
