Then quit. I have nothing against farmers, and I don't really care whether or not they get a brake on their plates or not. Farm plates are pennies on the dollar compared to all the other subsidies they get. I've known plenty of farmers in my life, and work with several. It IS hard work. Its more than that, its a hard way of life. That said, its still a choice.

I also wouldn't say that farming is harder than construction. I've worked for farmers (which is WAY different that being a farmer), and I've worked construction. With construction, the work is hard. With farming, the life is hard, or maybe more accurately the life is very stressful.

Agreed, and I wouldn't quit either. Just because its hard, doesn't mean its not worth doing, or that you can't love it.

I'm not whining about anything. Any time someone can avoid giving the government money, I'm all for it. No need to give those thieves any more than you absolutely have to. If you built a farming business from the ground up, that's pretty impressive. All the farmers I know at least started off with ground and equipment that they inherited. A friend of mine farms part time, but started off farming with his dad who inherited a small farm from his parents. Last year he lost a 100 acre lease that he had been farming for about a decade because it went to auction. He quit bidding on it at $10k per acre. If I remember correctly, it brought somewhere between 11.5 and 12. He was glad he didn't end up getting it at 10k because he would have lost money on it. Starting from scratch today would be nearly impossible in this area. The 250 acrefarm that I piddle around on belonged to the grandparents of my neighbors that I grew up next door to, and is now managed by those same grandkids. The grandfather bought it in the 50s. He grew up running his dads saw mill. Logged the mature Walnut off the next year and paid for it. Its loaded with walnut, hickory, squirrels, deer, and morels. What's a fella to do?
