I had a Red Maple succumb to the wind earlier this year. I pulled it out for firewood today. At about 12 feet up it forked into two leaders. Both leaders split off, each going in opposite directions. One laying flat on the ground and the other remained partially attached to the snag.
I had a good winching lane up to the snag. The leaders were 90* to the lane. I hung a snatch block on a birch (orange blob) and pulled out the side that was on the ground first. The other leader is in the foreground up off the ground.
Then I hung the block on the snag and pulled out the other leader.
Then I cut the snag and pulled it out. I cut one leader 24' long the other 21', plus some limb wood from each side.
