Barndominium/Shop or "real" House?

We built our house in 2018. I build all the cabinets out of wood. AB plywood for the cabinets, pine tongue and groove for the faces, doors and exposed side panels. I hate painted cabinets. People want them in their house fine, but not in mine. Jon

Screw painting good wood cabinets, I just put in Hickory cabinets a couple of years ago. The only wood that should be painted in a house is garbage looking wood or wood byproducts.
You would cry if you saw some of the old-growth woods that have been covered in paint the last 300 years, in this house. :ROFLMAO: Even our “new kitchen” cabinets, installed 1892 or thereabouts, are painted white. It was the style of the time, when good clear solid wood was less a novelty.

And no plywood, here. Everything is raised panel or headboard planking, except the shelves, which are single wide planks.

I have seen it, and as far as I've ever been concerned it's an abomination. I got to see an old house that all the trim and window stiles were American Chestnut that had been painted an ungodly amount of times. The last owners spent more time and money stripping and refinishing that beautiful wood then any kind of new trim would have cost them. When they got finished it was fantastic.

Yeah, I can appreciate keeping it natural and just varnished, but it’s out of place in an old house, and actually looks pretty odd if you’re used to seeing them kept authentic. Ours were all stripped down to bare wood and re-primed/painted by prior owner, so only have 1-2 coats, not hundreds of years worth of re-coats.

Of course, we did fall prey to the usual practice of stripping stucco and pointing the exposed stone on a few walls. Everyone does this for style, but it’s also a heck of a lot cheaper than new period-appropriate stucco on a non-Portland wall. So, we settle for keeping and repairing the original as long as we can, but eventually when it becomes unstable, we strip it and leave the stone exposed.

I hate days like this. Guy putting in the septic was on his last day. I noticed my yard hydrant was hit and bent to the point that it no longer functions.

I tried texting him to ask if he hit it, but no response. He was not there when I got to my build site and all his equipment was gone.

Sigh

Sometimes it's one step forwards, two steps backwards. Hopefully he'll make it right, but it sounds like another project that you'll have to do yourself. Maybe move it closer to the house so you can mow around it easier in the future?

I like Eddie's idea of moving it closer to the house. Now would be the time to do it as the lawn already needs some seeding.

Why not just eliminate the hydrant and have a tap attached to the house?

I much prefer hydrants to house taps. Less maintenance most of the time and all connections are outside.

This style is the best frost proof hydrant that I have ever had: Baker Water Systems - Monitor® Magnum Yard Hydrant

The water valve works just like a hydraulic spool valve. And after the hydrant is installed the handle can be rotated to any position desired then held there with the set screw.

Hydrant can't move due to a deck that will be built off the back. And I specifically went with a hydrant so I didn't have spigots on the outside of the building.

I just put this in last year, pisses me off it's already another project that needs taking care of.
