Part of the problem with the fires is that certain areas do not subscribe to the proper management of the forests. Those huge fires didn't happen as often in nature because smaller fires kept the fuel under control a bit. Forested areas need controlled burns and/or fire breaks to prevent some of this.

Costs are up because people build expensive things next to tinderboxes. My forest is about to be thinned (within the next week). It should help the remaining trees be healthier and make management easier.

I agree. We once had a booming forestry industry and I worked in it, but that ended pretty much mid 2000's around here. All the mills closed and logging came to a stand still, along with forest management.

I remember last year some on here were saying that farmers with D6(?) dozers were turned away when trying to help cut lines. Is that the case this year?

Been true here out west for a good 10 years now. Used to be, if a wildland fire got started the nearby ranchers and farmers would immediately mobilize, sending out their dozers and large tractors with discs to cut fire lines before the fire got too large and totally out of control. Our own Federal government put the kibosh on that. Now no one is allowed to fight a fire on public land unless they have gone through all the red tape of being "approved" as a firefighter and whatever equipment you would use has to be inspected and approved also. And of course there's costs associated with that. What farmer is going to take the time and money to be certified as a firefighter just in case there's a fire nearby (which may happen every 20 or every 50 years)?

So since Nevada is so sparsely populated and the fires may be so remote, the ranchers/farmers can but sit and watch for hours while waiting for Federal firefighting resources to respond from many miles away.
