Coca Cola in 10 ounce returnable bottles was my favorite drink until "New Coke" came out which I hated. I don't remember if that is when they started using HFCS but I do know that it had much less carbonation giving it a flatter taste. This was because they started using very thin aluminum cans and cheap plastic bottles like their 2 liter ones which could not hold the pressure of more carbonation. When they switched back to "old Coke" it was nothing like the old Coke used to be and always tasted flat to me.The "New Coke" debacle back in 1985 is viewed as a colossal failure. Yet I've always argued otherwise. They were trying to make Coke more Pepsi-like... not understanding there was a reason why we drank their product.
When "Coke Classic" came out, it was purported to be the old format. Yet one taste had me checking the ingredients, which were indeed changed.
So was "New Coke" really a mistake, or just a well played sleight of hand?
That initial taste of "Coke Classic" in July 1985 was the last time that I ever drank a "Cola."
