JD 790 Wouldnt start, just one bendix clank, then dash lites stopped working.

Ran fine on Friday then Sunday turned the key and the starter engaged but didn't crank. Same result next couple tries, next try no starter and the service lights stopped so now nothing. Battery is strong. I haven't had any safety switches acting up. What's between the key and starter besides the solenoid?

Bad connection somewhere. Battery terminals, ground, etc.
Probably corrosion at the ground where your negative cable bolts to the chassis. Also check fuses and then the fusible link.

In addition to the above suggestions have somebody monitor the actual battery voltage when the starter is engaged. A supposedly good battery can drop to a very low voltage under heavy load to to high internal resistance.

The last 2 batteries that have died at my place acted the exact same way. From all good to nothing at all.
