The Life of a Custom Mowing contractor

Some time back when hay was scarce TxDOT allowed people to hay the medians. Some are wide enough that there wasn't much trash. It helped some ranchers get through the tough times. Now it is just mowed.

AB&I and Tyler Pipe have a large plant on Hwy 69 north of Tyler. Driven by their plant several times. Both owned by McWane. Big enough that they even have their own credit union.

Bought a new ZD1611 ZTR... overheated.

I need hearing protection on my ZD1211. I wear a 3M Worktunes hearing protection/radio. I can hear the alarm without any issue.

    Need utility Side by Side

We had our Mule 4010 for 10 years on the farm. It pulled a manure spreader and a drag harrow daily. Never had to change the belt. It was in low range most of the time.

    Kubota M8 series engine

The M8 was designed by Kubota but is built in Canada by Buhler Industries at their Versatile plant. Kubota does not make the parts. Kubota doesn't make an engine large enough, hence the Cummins power plant. https://www.farmprogress.com/farming-equipment/taking-a-closer-look-at-the-kubota-m8

    DPF

The New Holland and Case utility tractors up to 75 hp such as my Workmaster 75, not made by LS, uses DOC/EGR instead of a DPF. The smaller CUTs made by LS use DPF.

    Tractor Insurance

I have the AgAdvantage policy with Texas Farm Bureau. It covers the buildings, equipment, liability for injury, drift while spraying, escaped livestock getting hit on the road, etc.

    Electricity Price Increases

Our coop rates just went up in April for the first time since 2008. The base rate went up $0.005/kWh to $0.109628/kWh. Monthly customer charge went up $5 to $25. It will go up again in April 2026 to $30.75. We utilize average billing, the $350 monthly bill covers the house, stables, and the...

    DPF

Not all manufacturers use a DPF to meet the emissions requirements. My 2020 New Holland Workmaster 75 uses DOC/EGR technology so there are no regens and no operating requirements. I run it at 2000 rpms which is PTO speed most of the time anyway as that gives me the speed I want in the gears I...

What did you buy this week?

The Yard in Tyler, Texas, a landscape supply company that sells bulk products. It was $82/yard. It comes out of Dallas from a large plant off I-20 that takes it in from highway projects. Most of the local yards around me that sell bulk rock and soil carry it. I have 4 yards within a...

What did you buy this week?

On Saturday I bought a Land Pride QH16 quick hitch and a Land Pride GS1560 grading scraper for my NH WM25. Today I bought 4 yards of recycled asphalt to start topdressing our driveway. Weight wise that is all my Big Tex 14TD dump trailer can haul in one trip. I could tell it was behind me.

GM recalls 721K trucks with 6.2L engine

Go for it. The wife's 2025 Tahoe High Country is really nice. If they had had one with the 3.0 Duramax we would have gotten it but went with the 6.2L instead. I have 16,000 miles on my 2024 Yukon Denali with the 3.0 Duramax. It shows a combined mileage of 24 mpg. On the highway I routinely...

GM recalls 721K trucks with 6.2L engine

No complaints here. I have a 6.6 Duramax and a 3.0 Duramax, both 2024 models GMCs. The 2025 Tahoe with a 6.2L is after the problem years.

Tires look brand new, but are 11 years old. Keep or discard?

I keep track of tire age on my vehicles and trailers. I tend to err on the side of caution. If it were my truck, it would get new tires. Here is the Discount Tires position, which I where I get my tires. They would not service them. And yes, I have replaced tires based on age that looked...
