Raised on small Appalachian farm. Never owned a tractor. Used hand tools for everything except plowing and cutting trees for firewood. Used horses for plowing and pulling loads. Used a chainsaw for felling trees, and hand tools for the rest. Mined coal from hillside behind home in small amounts in case of bad winters. Left home and eventually got a 4-year bachelor's degree with minors in Geology, Geography, and Botany in only 10 years. LOL Worked for ODNR for a while in Fisheries. Worked a few years as a Conservationist. Then got a government job that was stable and stuck with it. Stable income allowed me to buy some property, and now I'm learning how to use one of those modern contraptions called a tractor to do all the work that I'm accustomed to doing by hand. That's about it in a nutshell.
