I've moved tons of logs around with thongs, usually just hanging from the bucket, but also made a boom attachment for my compack JD 790 tractor. You have more control from the front, stacking them, or getting them out of the way. If the tractor doesn't want to pick it, just cut them smaller.

I say "go for it". But, buy something used. That way if you want bigger, smaller, different configuration, etc, you can sell it for little to no loss, and get exactly what you need.

I like having the equipment also, but for the amount I use it, I don't want the cost/maintenance. Last time a cleared an area, I rented a much larger than I needed for not a whole lot of money. Cost depends on the size you need and time you want it.

I would like to add a Hydraulic top link to the 790. The tractor has a rear power beyond, which is is just a hose between the QD ports. My question is it seems that any open center valve would work, like a log splitter valve. I go to the Northern Tool website, and someone asks the question if...
