Tech manual showed depressing tabs to remove. Have seen other models that way. Definitely not the first time the manual has led me astray. Does seem odd to rely on friction fit to hold it on.

There are plastic tabs under the tank that need to be depressed to release tank. Then it slides off. Still will be a little snug to release the seal of the orings. Most likely the orings are the source of the leak.

I was wondering if original poster could get a picture of the pipe found in shifter. Might help to identify it. If there is internal leakage due to misplaced or broken pipe, it would help explain the jerky hitch.

Have you checked ignition timing with a timing light? Should be at TDC at idle and 28 degrees advanced at wide open throttle.
