We live in the Sierra foothills too. I think it's less about which type of mower you use (we use an rfm) and more about how much time you spend clearing rocks (box scraper). We've built lots of rock walls from the 7ac we cleared around the house.
I once used my samurai to pull my busted rv off I-5. Granted I needed 4-low to move it, but we made it safely off the freeway. I always view towing a car as an insurance policy for when the RV breaks down.
When we bought our current place, I mowed a giant peace sign in one of the uncut pastures (about 1 ac in size). Kept it mowed that way long enough for Google satellite to snap a good picture.
I got it to feed a 5" piece of oak, but about half way through it stalled the tractor. That took a bit of work before I could engage the PTO again to back it out.
Went for a day hike yesterday to Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls. Some people like to talk bad about California but it sure is nice having Yosemite in my backyard.
Had the opportunity to use the chipper over the last couple of days. I took the advice from another post and loosened the springs on the feed roller. What a difference on feeding larger branches. Those things are way too tight as delivered from the factory.
