I do the same. 3 gallons in the 5 gallon can. Partially for weight, partially so I can tip it over farther before fuel flows out the nozzle.

Don't store the gas can on concrete. Wonderful heat sink maximizes condensation in the can.

I use 5 gallon "utility cans" with a big screw on cap. Put one of these through the treads threads in the center. Use the valve to regulate volume of flow or inhibit until the nozzle is in the filler cap. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DJT6V33D

Plastic vent caps are readily available on Amazon to install a traditional vent. No screw to lose.
