Success! You were all right, it was the battery (or lack thereof). It must have had some corrosion or a bad ground that I inadvertently fixed in my diagnosing, because when I swapped the battery early on, it did not solve the problem. And then yes, the jumper cables were too small for jumping...
Excellent point.....I was going to get a new battery for it today or tomorrow anyway, so I'll report back once I get that installed.
