Well I was finally able to dig into this. When I pushed the gland into the cylinder it exposed a groove, square edge toward the end and tapered into the cylinder. When I pulled the gland back out I could hear the ring make a hard stop. Sounds like the John Deere cylinder. I am going to find...

The exploded view of the parts does show a retaining ring. I couldn't figure out how it fit in. Thanks for the info I will investigate.
