Us nerds used pocket protectors to keep mom from yelling at us again when she found a shirt with a huge ink stain below the pocket.

You just conjured up a 45 year old memory, of mom yelling at dad about having ink stains on all of his shirt pockets, because he didn't wear a pocket protector. It wasn't fountain pens in those days (ca.1980), but those Cross twist pen/pencil sets all businessmen carried.

In the 60's I got my German made slide rule from the German owner of a garage I worked in part time. What a work of art and three decimal places was no problem. I could only dream of owning something so expensive.

Fast forward to many decades later when I tracked him down in in Florida and in his 80's. We fondly reminisced about the slide rule and other drafting tools I got from him. He mentioned his grandson or great-grandson was following in his mechanical footsteps.

That's all I needed so I packed up the slide rule, some other instruments I got from him and stuffed the rest of the box with Amish dried food or canned foods. When he got them he was so surprised he was speechless. He thought they were long gone and far forgotten. Nope.

I only carried pens, etc. in a shirt pocket a handful of times. Got tired of them falling out every time I leaned over. It was kind of a fad when I was in HS to carry your pens in a back pocket, wedged in with your wallet...something I do to this day.
Didn't stop me from getting yelled at by my mother though. One time I'd put a screwdriver in a back pocket, forgot about it and it poked thru the fabric making a hole in the upholstery of a living room chair.

Don't know what happened to my old sliderule. Probably got tossed decades ago, don't think I ever used it once I got out of school.

It was kind of a fad when I was in HS to carry your pens in a back pocket, wedged in with your wallet...something I do to this day.

Don't forget the comb that was back there.
