After a drunk driver totaled my new 1997 Cherokee in Nevada, and I was uninjured, the highway patrolman said he saw fewer fatalities and injuries of Cherokee occupants than any other cars.

My wife had a Grand Cherokee Laredo, bought new ca.2000. It was a terrible vehicle to drive, crazy dangerous, due to its high COG and too-soft suspension. Swerve to avoid a deer at 50 mph, and there was a good chance you’d lose control. I really hated driving that thing at any speed above “around town”.

She ended up rolling it on the PA turnpike, it got sideways on a patch of ice under the shade of an overpass, on an otherwise warm and wet morning commute. When the tires caught pavement on the far side of the overpass, it just started rolling. The car looked like Jill Taylor’s Nomad, after Tim dropped the I-beam on the thing.

But I will say, despite rolling the thing several times at roughly 70 mph, and all the carnage that involved, she did walk away from it with little more than a stiff neck. So I guess it had that going for it.

She replaced it with a new Jaguar, and was subsequently rear-ended by a plow truck while sitting at a stop sign, just six weeks later. We wanted insurance to total that car, as well, but they refused. The repair bill ended up being more than we paid for the vehicle, and it was never right after that. Plow truck driver was driving on an expired license from Alabama, and uninsured.

My 72 Wagoneer - 304 4 speed, manual steering, drum brakes, no AC - had terrible highway handling. I think due to it's too-firm suspension. On a smooth road as it approached 80 mph it felt more and more unsafe, needing continual steering correction. At high speed it felt like it could easily leave the pavement if you didn't catch it in time. I've noticed that later Wagoneers have a longer wheelbase.

But it was wonderful off-road, that's what I bought it for.

That's how I've felt about every CJ/Wrangler/Sahara we've ever owned. Great off-road vehicles, but embarrassingly bad for highway use.

Some people mis-interpret the meaning of equalizer link and overload one axle:

Over the years we have owned many Cherokees, several Wranglers a few CJ's and they were all competent highway vehicles. The CJ's the touchiest but when driven with the knowledge of their characterize competent on the road..

My driveway is a little over 10' wide, not much of a flare at the end. Oil/propane delivery trucks don't have any problem with it, UPS/Fedex usually park in the road and walk in.
My wife can't consistently manage to go in/out without driving on the grass with a midsize sedan.
My driveway is 12' and in places 14'. Plenty of room. Wife drives over both sides by the same amount. UPS, FedEx, no problem. Wife, problem.

After decades of stay off the lawn, I finally have given up and advise others the same. We will never win.

I just spend a few days with a rental 2024 Wagoneer; the new one is definitely a highway cruiser and that 3.0 Hurricane twin-turbo is... just quick, it's going to be slow going back to my F350.

I understand they've gotten better over the generations. "Competent" is a low bar, and at a certain speed, I'd even debate if they qualify as that.

I actually drove a Wrangler on the highway everyday when I was too poor to afford a second vehicle. A great highway experience, they are not! Especially back then, dealing with soft windows at toll booths, my frustration brought me close to just knifing one open on a few occasions. :p

I'll take a sedan, ten times out of ten, over any Jeep product on the highway. Hell, my pickup truck rides like a limousine, compared to any Wrangler at 70-80 mph.

I drove my CJ 3A as a daily in and around Los Angeles for years, and on a Virginia to California trip.

Of course, the latter was more like driving an EV. Only short distances covered each day, and slowly.

On the other hand, I got it up about 90 mph once (no windshield helped a lot), all with a spring-over conversion, maximized articulation, and an 80-inch wheelbase.

Yes, I rolled it over several times, but never when driving on roads.

We wanted to go out to dinner Friday night and the restaurant we wanted to go to had no open reservations suddenly. So we ended up at another restaurant.

We did find out what happened later:

I agree that a Wrangler isn't the best riding vehicle in the world, but not fair to tar all Jeeps with the same brush. Had a couple Grand Cherokees and they rode/handled just fine. Then again, I have a neighbor who shares your views. Dunno...different driving technique?

I agree about a sedan for comfortable driving. My wife drives a sedan and won't ride in either of my pickups, so we take it when driving any distance. No way I would drive a short wheelbase like a Wrangler at 80 mph on a regular basis.

My wife drove our driveway about the same, she said I stay in the middle. Trouble is the driver seat in a car is not in the middle.
When I explained and showed her by driving in the middle, she understood.
She said, "now I know why you always told me I was driving on the fog line on a highway.
That all happened perhaps 40 years ago, just after we married.

As a kid I remember Grandad had a small piece of white tape in lower left of his windshield which I asked what it was for. Tape lined up perfectly with edge of the road.
